Tuesday Musical will be partnering with the prestigious Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. to help grow Ohio’s musical community, offering three free workshops for educators throughout the year.
As initiated by the Kennedy Center, TMA’s partnering organizations will include the Tri-County Educational Service Center, Wayne Center for the Arts, and the College of Wooster. Nationwide there are approximately 100 partnership teams in nearly 40 states and the District of Columbia. The partnership provides professional arts learning opportunities for teachers throughout Northeast Ohio to propel the growth of artistic literacy among young people.
The first session, “Bash the Trash,” begins on Thursday, October 4, and is designed for educators of grades K-6. Led by Kennedy Center teaching artist, environmentalist, and composer John Bertles, participants will build musical instruments made from recycled materials, and learn how to utilize these to teach science and literacy.
The series continues on Thursday, October 25 with “Building Reading Comprehension through Sound and Rhythm,” for educators of grades 1-5. Kennedy Center teaching artist Imani Gonzalez will share methods for helping students create soundscapes. The aim is to develop listening skills, build confidence with interpretation and oral presentation, and improve reading fluency through the activity.
The final workshop on January 24 for educators in grades 2-8 will be presented in two parts: “Cut Paper: A Pathway to Writing” and “Making it Stick: Memory Comprehension through Abstract Art.”
Workshops are open to all educators, and will take place from 4:30-7:30 pm at The Lipman School, 750 White Pond Drive in Akron.
No musical background is needed, however pre-registration is required.
