Review: Linden String Quartet on Signature Series at Lorain County Community College (October 7)

Linden-SQ-outdoorsNortheast Ohio – cradle of string quartets! The Linden String Quartet, which began when the players were graduate students at the Cleveland Institute of Music, have achieved a remarkable record of success in five years – topped by the gold medal at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in 2009 and a win at the Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition the next year.

On Monday, the Lindens played a full program of string quartet music as part of the Signature Series at Lorain County Community College’s Stocker Center for the Arts.

Like another area quartet (the Jasper, which began at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music), the Lindens went from CIM to a two-year residency at Yale, under the guidance of the Tokyo String Quartet. They have recently returned to the Cleveland area, full of energy about programming, community outreach, and repertoire. [Read more…]

Review: Linden String Quartet with Arthur Rowe — beginning a new series at Reinberger Chamber Hall (April 2)

Linden-QuartetWhat if you gave a concert and nobody came? “We were all having [nightmares] about this,” violinist Sarah McElravy nervously confessed to a near-capacity audience who had gathered in Reinberger Hall at Severance Hall on Tuesday, April 2. The occasion was the inaugural concert of the Linden String Quartet’s own Parallels Cleveland Chamber Music Series which featured the music of Haydn, Bolcom and Schumann.

Founded in the spring of 2008 at the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Linden Quartet (violinists Sarah McElravy and Catherine Cosbey, violist Eric Wong and cellist Felix Umansky) have quickly established an impressive reputation on the national and international chamber music circuit. Preview: Linden String Quartet to launch series at Reinberger Chamber Hall at Severance Hall

Linden-QuartetOne of the great joys of living in a region that has more then its share of music schools is that quite often “students” return to the area as accomplished professional artists. And, one can find joy in knowing that you first heard them perform way back when. Case in point, the Linden String Quartet.

On Tuesday, April 2nd beginning at 7:30 PM, in Severance Hall’s Reinberger Chamber Hall, the quartet will present their first concert as part of the Parallels Cleveland Chamber Music Series. The concert features guest artists pianist Arthur Rowe and Cleveland Orchestra concertmaster William Preucil in Chausson’s Concerto for Piano, Violin and String Quartet in D major. The program also includes Haydn’s Quartet in D major, Op. 76, and William Bolcom’s Three Rags for String Quartet.
