CIPC Young Artists Winner to open Indians Season April 10

Arianna Körting, who won first prize in the senior division of the 2012 Cleveland International Piano Competition’s Young Artists Competition, will play the National Anthem at Progressive Field on Friday, April 10 just after 4:00 pm, when the Cleveland Indians play their season opener against the Detroit Tigers.

A CIM graduate, Körting is now studying for her bachelor’s degree at Juilliard. The 2015 CIPC Young Artists Competition for pianists ages 12-18 will run from May 12-21 at Baldwin Wallace and at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Daniel Hathaway founded ClevelandClassical.com in September, 2008, after a thirty-one year tenure as music director of Cleveland’s Trinity Cathedral, where he founded the Wednesday Noon Brownbag Concert Series and Trinity Chamber Orchestra. A graduate of Harvard College and the Episcopal Divinity School, he also studied historical musicology at Princeton and Harvard Universities. Before coming to Cleveland in 1977, he served as head of humanities at the Sunset Hill School in Kansas City and as head of arts at Groton School in Massachusetts. In Cleveland, he has served on the music staff of Cleveland Opera, Great Lakes Theater Festival, and the faculty of Laurel School. As an organist, Hathaway has played recitals in the U.S., England, France, Germany, and Austria. He team-teaches Music Journalism at Oberlin College and Conservatory and is a member of the Music Critics Association of North America.

The Kings Brass at Federated Church (Dec. 22)

The King’s Brass celebrated Christmas in bright and merry fashion with their trademark — pop-tinged arrangements of Christmas carols, hymns, and sing-alongs — on Sunday, December 22, as part of the Federated Church Performing Arts Series in Chagrin Falls.

The ensemble has been led for 47 years by Tim Zimmerman, who was a genial host and fine trumpeter. The well-blended group of nine musicians — Tim Zimmerman, Gregory Alley, Anthony Sanders (trumpet), Kyle Davidson, Kolbe Schnoebelen (trombone), Nate Petersen (bass trombone), Jacob Fulkerson (tuba), Colton Morris (percussion), and Rebecca Edmiston (piano/organ) — acquitted themselves well under Zimmerman’s leadership.

The arrangements, most of them by Zimmerman himself, suffered a little from sameness, but nevertheless supplied plenty of Holiday zip and opportunities for the brass to shine. [Read on…]
