Recitals and chamber music concerts by faculty members at Northeast Ohio conservatories, colleges and universities add to the rich menu of classical music in the region. Usually free, these events begin coming onto the calendar in September. Here’s a quick look at the first performances of the fall.
Oberlin Conservatory faculty members David Bowlin, Gregory Fulkerson and Marilyn McDonald, violins, Peter Slowik and Michael Strauss, violas, Darrett Adkins and Catharina Meints, cellos, and Monique Duphil, piano, will play Mozart’s String Quintet in c minor, K. 406, and Brahms’s Piano Quintet in f minor, op. 34 in Kulas Recital Hall at the Conservatory on Thursday, September 4 at 8:00. The free concert will be streamed via Oberlin’s “Listen Live” service.
Youngstown State University Dana School of Music horn professor Stacie Mickens will join harpist Marissa Knaub in music for the unusual combination of horn and harp on Friday, September 5 in Bliss Recital Hall. The program includes Barbara York’s Horn Sonata, Douglas Hill’s Jazz Set for solo horn, Jan Koetsier’s Sonata for horn and harp & works by Bernard Andrès & Marcel Tournier.
On Saturday, September 6 at 3:00 pm in Gamble Auditorium, the Baldwin Wallace faculty piano duo of Christine and Anthony Fuoco will lead off BW’s faculty recitals with Schubert’s Fantasy in F Minor, Corigliano’s Gazebo Dances, Stravinsky’s Sonata for Two Pianos & Brahms’s Variations on a Theme by Haydn.
The University of Akron will introduce new faculty members Margaret Tung, horn, Heidi Ruby-Kushious, flute & Christopher Blaha, tuba, in a recital on Wednesday, September 17 at 8:00 pm in Guzzetta Recital Hall.
At the Cleveland Institute of Music, violinist Ivan Zenaty (pictured above) will open CIM’s faculty recital series on Friday, September 26 at 8:00 pm with a program of unaccompanied music to include Biber’s Passacaglia for Solo Violin, Bartók’s Sonata for Solo Violin (Tempo di Ciaccona), J.S. Bach’s Partita No. 2 in d, BWV 1004 (Ciaccona), Ysaÿe’s Sonata No. 1 in g, Op. 27 & Paganini’s Variations on “Nel cor più non mi sento” (arr. V. Prihoda). The performance in Mixon Hall is free, but seating passes are required (call 216.795.3211).
And Kent State University piano professor Jerry Wong will open the Kent State Piano Series on Sunday, September 28 at 5:00 pm in Ludwig Recital Hall. Program to be announced, and there is an admission charge except for KSU Kent campus undergrads.
