“I always gravitate to operettas,” Daigle said during a telephone interview earlier this summer. “I think it’s because when I started here at OLO, my first show was Emmerich Kálmán’s The Gypsy Princess. Because of my background in directing opera and as an educator dealing mostly with classical music, it really represents the diffusion of all things wonderful about lyric theater.”

We asked OLO artistic director Steven Daigle to suggest a group of colleagues who would be willing to participate in an informal roundtable discussion about how all the moving parts come together for a summer of lyrical theater.
After seeing the second performance of Guys and Dolls on June 12, we returned to Freedlander Theatre later that evening to meet up with music director Michael Borowitz, choreographer, director & cast member Spencer Reese, returning cast member Maggie Langhorne, first-summer cast member Kate Bilenko, and assistant production manager & scenic designer Daniel Hobbs.

But setting the first act of Gilbert & Sullivan’s 1889 show in Venice gave Arthur Seymour Sullivan an infectious lexicon of Mediterranean dance tunes to work with — the cachucha, fandango, and bolero — and 135 years later, it suggested an exotic palette of colors for the OLO sets by Daniel Hobbs and costumes by Brooke Kesler.
Sullivan’s desire to create theater that aspired to grand opera dimensions was rewarded with a libretto by William Schenck Gilbert that inspired him to write fifteen minutes’ worth of continuous music at the top of the show. [Read more…]

The charming, feel-good 1937 musical — with music by Noel Gay and book/lyrics by Douglas Furger & L. Arthur Rose — may not be much of a household name these days. But after its original success in London’s West End, a revised book by Stephen Frey and Mike Ockrent in the 1980s made the show a huge hit across the pond on Broadway. And the Ohio Light Opera’s dazzling premiere makes it easy to see why.

Allen is directing two shows this season: Guys and Dolls and Me and My Girl, the latter of which opens on Thursday, June 20 at 2:00 pm at Freedlander Theatre.
The show includes music by Noel Gay and lyrics by Douglas Furber and L. Arthur Rose. Tickets are available online.
I caught up with Allen by phone to talk about the two shows he’s directing — and his history with the company.

Marking its 45th season as a company and its 40th in Freedlander Theater at the College of Wooster, OLO delivered handsome productions of these venerable shows by the creative teams of Frank Loesser (music and lyrics) and Jo Swerling & Abe Burrows (book) in the case of Guys and Dolls, and Richard Rodgers (music), Oscar Hammerstein II (lyrics), and Howard Lindsay & Russell Crouse (book) for The Sound of Music.

“At some level, we’ve already worked on all six of the shows,” OLO artistic director Steven Daigle said by telephone during a rehearsal break last weekend. “We’re getting to know the singers better now that we’ve had more time to work with them, and we’re excited — it’s going to be a really great company.”
Based on two short stories by Damon Runyon, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, Guys and Dolls follows a pair of big city gamblers and the women who are in love with them.
Daigle noted that OLO has been staging what he called “Golden Age Musicals” for the past eight to ten years. “We’re now at a point where we have already produced most of them. And when we were tracking some of the blockbusters, Guys and Dolls just came up as a fun show. [Read more…]

Local 4 of the American Federation of Musicians will present the fourth edition of She Scores, a celebration of music written by underrepresented composers, from May 30 through June 2 (Thursday through Saturday at 7 and Sunday at 4) in Mixon Hall at the Cleveland Institute of Music. In a preview article, Mike Telin writes, “what began with performances of works by 16 composers has now blossomed into a four-concert series featuring works by 31 living composers who identify as female or nonbinary.” Emily Laurance will give a pre-concert lecture an hour before each performance. Admission is free.
Encore Chamber Music’s 9th annual Music and Ideas Festival gets underway on June 2, and continues through June 24. [Read more…]

Daniel Hathaway: Are you enjoying your visit to Wooster?
Yvonne Kálmán: Very much. I love it here. I’ve been here many times. They’ve done 14 of my father’s operettas. I haven’t been to all, but I’ve been to several, and I’ve enjoyed it very much. I’ve made some wonderful friends here and love coming back.
DH: OLO’s a great company, isn’t it?
YK: It’s the best. The works are performed with complete devotion, and they bring out the best of the author’s intentions.
DH: And I think they’ve done more of your father’s operettas than those of any other composer.
YK: Well, I’m very happy about that, but we’re not over yet. They have three more to do, and then I want them to start back at number one. [Read more…]
