Severance Hall, home of The Cleveland Orchestra, has announced a call for volunteer ushers and tour guides for its 2017-2018 event and concert season, which will include performances by TCO, the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra and Youth Chorus, the Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra, and many other ensembles, as well as non-musical events. For the past seven summers, young musicians have traveled to the Oberlin College campus to compete in the Thomas and Evon Cooper International Competition.
On Saturday, July 15 at 1:30 pm in Warner Concert Hall at the Oberlin Conservatory, 24 young violinists representing eight U.S. States and eight countries will begin their quest for the $20,000 grand prize as well as the opportunity to perform full concertos with The Cleveland Orchestra under the direction of Jahja Ling in Severance Hall on Friday, July 21 at 7:30 pm. Reinberger Chamber Hall at Severance Hall hosted the penultimate concert of ChamberFest Cleveland’s sixth season on the evening of June 30. It was the first ChamberFest experience for my family, who were visiting from the Washington, D.C. area. There are many reasons to admire violinist Jennifer Koh. She possesses virtuosic technique, an impressive bow-arm, impeccable intonation, a tonal palette worthy of a master-painter, and she has an astute understanding of complex musical structures. Above all, her musical decisions are always intelligent and thoughtful. These attributes were on display when the dynamic violinist performed a recital on Wednesday, June 28 in Ludwig Hall as part of the Kent Blossom Music Festival.
