CITYMUSIC CLEVELAND ANNOUNCES REDUCED SEASON:
In an email yesterday, CityMusic Cleveland advised its patrons that it will postpone all of its planned orchestra concerts for next season. CMC President Ronald Strauss wrote, “With ongoing uncertainty about the spread of COVID-19 and the questionable advisability of large gatherings in the foreseeable future, unfortunately CityMusic is not able to assume the risk of planning for orchestra concerts that may not occur or may be only sparsely attended due to health concerns.” Instead the organization will give six free chamber music concerts at the Praxis Fiber Workshop and the Fire Museum, and continue its Clurie Bennis Children’s Outreach Series.
Watch a video here of CityMusic Cleveland’s concert at the Maltz Performing Arts Center in March of 2019. Avner Dorman conducts the premiere of his own Third Violin Concerto, Still, with Sayaka Shoji. Also on the program: Takemitu’s Waltz and Poulenc’s Sinfonietta.
TODAY’S ALMANAC:
On today’s date in 1882, conductor Leopold Stokowski was born in London, and in 1965 the great African American mezzo-soprano Marian Anderson sang her farewell concert in New York’s Carnegie Hall. The two artists came together in this 1944 “Christmas Carols” feature filmed for American military personnel stationed overseas during World War II. Anderson joins Stokowski, the Westminster Choir, and a small orchestra in Schubert’s Ave Maria.
