TODAY’S ALMANAC:
George Crumb’s Ancient Voices of Children received its first performance on this date in 1970 at the Library of Congress by the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, featuring pianist Gilbert Kalish, mezzo-soprano Jan DeGaetani, and boy soprano Michael Dash.
Commissioned by the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation, the work sets texts by Federico Garcia Lorca scored for soprano, boy soprano, oboe, mandolin, harp, amplified piano, toy piano, and percussion (three players).
The following year, Ancient Voices was recorded by the same forces on the Nonesuch label and eventually sold more than 70,000 LPs. Listen here.
