ALSO ON TODAY’S SCHEDULE:
The Firelands Symphony has partnered with Sandusky Parks & Recreation for a free monthly drumming program — “Drumming with Dylan” — led by FSO percussionist Dylan Moffitt (right). Aimed at ages 12 to adult, the program focuses on different styles of drumming from around the world. Originally scheduled for the 18th, the October session will now be held today at 5:45 pm in the auditorium of the Cedar Point Center building at Bowling Green State University’s Firelands Campus. For more information about this and future sessions, click here.
And this month, in collaboration with Stark Libraries, the Canton Symphony is presenting ten performances of “Listen @ the Library,” a program of trio performances introducing students ages 3-6 to instruments of the orchestra while they read and listen to stories. Today’s hour-long performances will be held at the East Canton Branch at 10:00 am, and at the North Branch at 11:30 am. Details here.
NEWS BRIEFS:
On Saturday, trumpeter Michael Sachs — chair of the Cleveland Institute of Music’s brass division — wrote on Facebook that he has resigned. Read Kabir Bhatia’s article for Ideastream here.
TODAY’S ALMANAC:
Canadian-American composer, keyboardist, and choral director R. Nathaniel Dett was born on this date in 1882 in Drummondville — now part of Niagara Falls, Ontario. We honored Dett on October 2, on the 80th anniversary of his passing, with an Almanac entry focused on his epic oratorio The Ordering of Moses.
For his birthday anniversary, we’ll feature another of the composer’s most famous works: Listen to the Lambs for eight-part mixed choir and solo soprano. And who better to sing it than the Nathaniel Dett Chorale? Founded in 1998, the ensemble is Canada’s first professional choir dedicated to Afrocentric music of all styles.
In 2002, under the baton of founder and artistic director Brainerd Blyden-Taylor, they recorded the album Listen To The Lambs – The Music Of R. Nathaniel Dett. Listen to the full album here, and the title track here.
And Austrian organist-composer Anton Bruckner died in Vienna on this date in 1896. He is often spoken about in the same breath as his massive symphonies, of which he wrote eleven, but sticking to today’s theme, he is also beloved for his many sacred choral works. Among those are 40-some motets, including the popular Locus Iste. Listen to a recording here by the ensemble VOCES8.
