Baldwin Wallace FOCUS Festival: chamber works by guest composer David Lang (Mar. 19)

LANG-DavidOver the years, Baldwin Wallace’s FOCUS Contemporary Music Festival has showcased a long list of composers of our time, ranging from Witold Lutoslawski and Krzysztof Penderecki to Christopher Theofanidis and Chen Yi. The latest guest, Bang on a Can co-founder David Lang, was fêted in three concerts and a convocation from March 16-19, performed by the Cleveland Chamber Symphony and BW’s own ensembles. Baldwin Wallace FOCUS Festival to feature music by David Lang

LANG-DavidWhen questions arise while learning a new piece of music, there’s no greater resource for musicians than the composers themselves. Beginning on Wednesday, March 16, Baldwin Wallace University’s Conservatory of Music will kick off its biennial FOCUS Festival, which will feature three concerts of music by the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang. And yes, Lang will be on hand to answer any questions that students and faculty may have regarding his music and career.

“The festival has been going on since the ‘70s, and it all started because we don’t get to ask composers like Bach any questions,” BW composer-in-residence and assistant professor of music Clint Needham said during a telephone conversation. [Read more…]

BangOnACanAllStarsSince playing their first marathon concert on Mother’s Day of 1987 in a SoHo art gallery, Bang on a Can founders Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe have gone on to create a multi-faceted performing arts organization with a broad range of year-round international activities. One of those activities is the Bang on a Can All-Stars. Formed in 1992, the All-Stars present dynamic performances of music that inventively crosses the boundaries between classical, jazz, rock, world and experimental music.
