The Oberlin Organ Academy continues today with a free faculty recital by Mark Edwards (pictured), who will play both harpsichord and organ at 7:30 pm in Oberlin’s Fairchild Chapel.

NEW RECORDING:

Cleveland Orchestra bass trombonist Luke Sieve is featured on a recent album released by Naxos on July 10. Larry Lipkis: Pierrot and Friends features four concertos from American composer Larry Lipkis, all based on characters from commedia dell’arte.

Sieve performs Lipkis’ bass trombone concerto, Harlequin, with the Lviv National Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Theodore Kuchar. Flutist Mykhailo Sosnovsky, bassoonist Andriy Tkachuk, and violinist Oksana Hretchyn are also featured. Listen here.

Austrian-American composer Arnold Schoenberg died on this date in 1951 in Los Angeles. Leader of the Second Viennese School, Schoenberg is best known for his twelve-tone technique, which “democratizes” the chromatic scale, giving all twelve notes roughly equal importance. [Read more…]
