The Vienna Boys Choir, Orpheus Chamber Ensemble, and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble are among the ensembles that will visit Akron as part of Tuesday Musical’s Main Stage and FUZE series for the 2017-18 season. This marks the 130th anniversary of the organization.
The season will open with a “Prelude Concert” that will include performances by Tuesday Musical 2017 Scholarship Competition winner, soprano Olivia Boen, and 2016 Cleveland International Piano Competition winner Nikita Mndoyants. The evening will also feature the premiere of a piece written for the commemoration of the anniversary by University of Akron composer James Wilding, performed by the Escher String Quartet, Tuesday Musical’s Quartet-in-Residence. The concert in E.J. Thomas Hall on September 16th at 7:30 pm will be preceded by a “Prelude” party at 5:30 pm.
“During this anniversary year we are also celebrating our vibrant education and community engagement programs that break down barriers to classical music for children and adults by providing opportunities to experience some of the best live music from around the world,” said executive and artistic director Jarrod Hartzler in a press release. Tuesday Musical’s Main Stage programs will feature pre-concert talks one hour before each performance.
Other highlights of Tuesday Musical’s anniversary season include the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, performing on January 23rd, pianist Andreas Haefliger on March 8th, and the Brentano String Quartet with flutist Marina Piccinini on April 18th.
Another change for the organization is the location of the concerts in the FUZE series. Usually held in smaller venues, these concerts will also take place at E.J. Thomas Hall. Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra will perform on September 28th, presented in collaboration with the University of Akron. The series also includes a “Tribute to Sarah Vaughan,” performed by the Chicago Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Jeff Lindberg on March 17th.
Main Stage and FUZE subscriptions and single tickets can be purchased online. Student tickets are free for all Tuesday Musical concerts.
