ANNOUNCEMENTS:

After his performances of September in the Rain, Lush Life, and Every Day I Have the Blues on Sunday at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, 2023 Oberlin graduate Tyreek McDole was named the winner of this year’s Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, taking home the grand prize of $5,000.

Reviewing the event for London Jazz News, Morgan Enos wrote, “Clearly, McDole doesn’t just have a way with the blues; he has a sinuous and companionable way with them.” Read the review here.

Assembly for the Arts will hold its Quarterly State of the Arts on December 6 at Karamu House. “Stay up to date on the most recent creative-industry-wide information over a meal and good company. We share updates on industry data trends, public policy, artist funding, racial equity initiatives, and more. Violinist Jinjoo Cho: Barber with BlueWater & writing a book

Following up on her Tchaikovsky Concerto performance four years ago, violinist Jinjoo Cho will make a return appearance with BlueWater Chamber Orchestra on Friday, November 17 at 7:30 pm at Church of the Covenant.

This time, the first prize winner of the 2014 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis will focus on the Concerto of Samuel Barber — part of an all-American program led by Daniel Meyer that will also include Cindy McTee’s Adagio for String Orchestra and Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring: Suite for Full Orchestra. At 6:00 pm in Fynes Hall, Baldwin Wallace Conservatory will host Bowling Green string faculty Caroline Shin (violin) and Brian Snow (cello) in a duo recital that you can watch in person or via livestream. The concert will be followed by a masterclass, and both events are free.

And at 7:30 pm, Les Délices will premiere SalonEra Season 4 Episode 2 on YouTube. “Shipwreck!” explores Henry VIII’s flagship the Mary Rose, which sank in 1545 with a chest full of instruments on board. This episode will feature Allison Monroe (vielle) and Peter Walker (bagpipes) discussing how to tell the ship’s story through music, and will include performances by the Medieval ensemble Trobár. CIM New Music Ensemble: Cerrone the guest, Saariaho the dedicatee

There are two main elements to the CIM New Music Ensemble’s program on Sunday, November 12 at 4:00 pm in Mixon Hall.

First there is the guest composer: Christopher Cerrone, who in the last decade has been both a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the winner of the Rome Prize.

Second is the program’s dedicatee: Kaija Saariaho, who was considered one of the greatest living composers until her passing in June from brain cancer.

I reached the Ensemble’s director, Keith Fitch (pictured), to learn about how that idea came together, and how Cerrone and Saariaho mesh.

Or you can visit the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Gartner Auditorium to hear Freedom First, the debut album from Cleveland-born poet, writer, and activist Keith LaMar (above, on-screen). LaMar will perform the album remotely from his cell at the Ohio State Penitentiary, where he has spent 30 years in solitary confinement on death row for a crime he testifies that he did not commit. He’ll be joined by Albert Marquès (piano), Chris Coles (alto sax), Zaire Darden (drums), and Jordan McBride (bass). Tickets are available here.

HAPPENING TODAY:

Organist Monica Csausz Berney kicks off the evening schedule with a 7:30 recital at Trinity Cathedral, co-sponsored by the Cleveland Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. As Daniel Hathaway wrote in a preview, “Berney will make use of both the Cathedral’s 1977 Flentrop organ and its 2022 Skinner / Aeolian-Skinner / Mueller instrument in a program largely devoted to transcriptions of works originally written for other musical media” — including works by J.S. Bach, Johannes Brahms, Nikolai Kapustin, Sigfrid Karg-Elert, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

And at 7:30 at West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church, the Rocky River Chamber Music Society presents cellist Keith Robinson, pianist Hyunsoon Whang, and clarinetist Daniel McKelway in music by Samuel Barber, Sergei Prokofiev, and Johannes Brahms. Akropolis Reed Quintet 
visits Tuesday Musical series

If the reed quintet were a person, it would be a millennial.

A variation on the wind quintet, with flute and horn jettisoned in favor of saxophone and bass clarinet — reed-brethren of oboe, clarinet, and bassoon — the instrumentation was born as recently as 1985, when five high schoolers in Amsterdam came together to form Calefax. The group gradually amassed a body of repertoire where there was none, and began to spread their musical seed.

One of the groups they inspired to spring up is the Detroit-based Akropolis Reed Quintet — oboist Tim Gocklin, clarinetist Kari Landry, saxophonist Matt Landry, bassoonist Ryan Reynolds, and bass clarinetist Andrew Koeppe — winners of the Gold Medal at the 2014 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, among several national prizes.

Now celebrating their 15th-anniversary season, Akropolis will visit Northeast Ohio next week for a recital on the Tuesday Musical series on November 7 at 7:30 pm at E.J. Thomas Hall.

Their program includes Marc Mellits’s Splinter, Willem Jeths’s Maktub, George Gershwin’s An American in Paris (arranged by none other than Calefax saxophonist Raaf Hekkema), and a recent commission of theirs: Omar Thomas’s Moods and Attitudes, a classical work fueled by the composer’s background in jazz, its movements visiting the genres of blues, ballad, and bebop.
