Cleveland Orchestra appoints assistant concertmaster
The fourth chair of The Cleveland Orchestra’s first violin section will be occupied from August 29 by newly appointed assistant concertmaster Jessica Lee. A graduate of Curtis and Juilliard, and a long-time member of the Johannes String Quartet, Lee has most recently served on the faculty at Rutgers and Vassar.
Cleveland Orchestra appoints Wesley Collins as principal viola
Wesley Collins, currently third-chair viola in the Boston Symphony, will inherit the principal viola chair of The Cleveland Orchestra from Robert Vernon at the beginning of the next Severance Hall Season. A 2007 graduate of CIM, where he studied with Vernon, the Cincinnati native is the son of musicians. His father was the former principal trumpet of the Cincinnati Symphony.

Met Opera names Nézet-Séguin as music director
Yannick Nézet-Séguin, 41, will succeed James Levine as music director of New York’s Metropolitan Opera beginning in the 2020-2021 season, but will assume the title of music director designate in 2017-2018. He will remain music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra through the 2025-2026 season. Read the New York Times story here.
Detroit Symphony VP to take the reins at CIM

Pierre Boulez, 90
French composer and conductor Pierre Boulez, who served as musical advisor and frequent guest conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra over a span of 50 years, died on Tuesday, January 5 at his home in Baden-Baden, Germany. Read the NY Times Obituary here.
YSU Wind Ensemble to play at Carnegie Hall November 27
The 55-member Youngstown State University Wind Ensemble, conducted by Stephen Gage and Brandt Payne, has been invited for the second time in a decade to perform in Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall in New York.
During the concert, on Friday, November 27 at 8:00 pm, the YSU ensemble will share the stage with the National Festival Chorus and the Florida Gulf Coast University Wind Orchestra.
A special pre-concert alumni and friends event is being planned in New York and special concert ticket prices and travel arrangements for fans are being offered.

Lake Como Pianists to kick off Oberlin Artist Recital Series
Allesandro Deljavan, Ran Jia, and Marcos Madrigal, three pianists who represent the International Piano Academy Lake Como, will play the opening concert of this season’s Oberlin Artist Recital Series in Finney Chapel on Sunday, September 27 at 8:00 pm. Their visit to Oberlin also marks the beginning of a partnership that establishes Oberlin as the North American outpost of the famous Italian piano academy. Read the Oberlin News Center story here.
