Kent State University’s New Music Series will get underway on Thursday, October 2 at 8:00 pm in Ludwig Recital Hall with a concert by the Meridian Arts Ensemble brass quartet, featuring music by Cleveland composer Andrew Rindfleisch along with works by Stephen Foster, James Thornton, Amy Williams, Walter Kollo, Giovanni Gabrieli, David Felder and Karlheinz Stockhausen. The performance is part of KSU’s Vanguard New Music Guest Artist Series, which operates in tandem with the university’s New Music Series, Frank Wiley, director.
The Meridian Arts Ensemble brass quintet, Jon Nelson and Tim Leopold, trumpets, Daniel Grabois, horn, Benjamin Herrington, trombone, and Raymond Stewart, tuba, were first prize winners in the 1990 Concert Artists Guild New York Competition, and have performed in fourteen countries. The group has released nine compact discs and has been recognized by ASCAP and Chamber Music America for its adventurous programming.
Rindfleisch, who is professor of composition at Cleveland State University, will be represented on the program by several original compositions as well as arrangements.
The Vanguard Guest Artists Series will continue with five other guest soloists and ensembles, who will appear in concert and work with students of the Hugh A. Glauser School of Music in workshops, presentations, masterclasses and readings of works by student composers.
Quince Contemporary Vocal Ensemble (above) will perform Morton Feldman’s Three Voices on Saturday, October 25 at 7:30 pm, followed by New York pianist Karl Larson in a program of new works for solo piano on Thursday, November 6 at 8:00 pm.
The French saxophone and piano duo of Jean-Michel Goury and Yves Josset will play new music by guest composer Denis Levaillant and others on Saturday, December 6 at 7:30 pm.
A Northeast Ohio ensemble, reVoice (soprano Susan Fletcher, mezzo-soprano Megan Elk and guests) will perform on Saturday, March 7 at 7:30 pm, followed by a performance of former KSU faculty composer Anthony Donofrio’s work, V, by the Atlanta ensemble Chamber Cartel on Saturday, April 25 at 7:30 pm. All Vanguard series performances are free.
Throughout the year, the KSU New Music Series will feature the Kent State New Music Ensemble directed by Wiley. The free concerts, scheduled on Saturdays at 7:30 pm on October 11, November 16, February 8 and April 11, will include and faculty and visiting artists.
