Stars in the Classics cabaret: a melting pot of music, visual art, and dance

If you’ve driven past the Cleveland History Center, you’ve likely spotted a memento from Euclid Beach Park. The large, colorful carousel visible through the glass windows entertained visitors at the lakefront amusement park until its closure in 1969.

Jodi Kanter has fond memories of visiting as a child. “My grandfather and my father worked there as teenagers,” she said. “And I think my father ran the carousel at one time.”

For the past year, Kanter has been helping memorialize the Park through music, via a commission from composer Chris Neiner. And on Saturday, September 28 at 4:00 pm, M.U.S.i.C. – Stars in the Classics will present the world premiere of the final movement at Praxis Fiber Workshop. [Read more…]

Cleveland Ballet: an evening of firsts

Many exciting things are happening for the Cleveland Ballet. On Friday, April 21 and on Saturday April 22 at 7:00 pm at Connor Palace Theatre at Playhouse Square, the company will for the first time present George Balanchine’s Serenade.

The program also includes the Company’s first commissioned musical score, Symphony of Life by ​Israeli composer Anna Segal. And both works will be performed with the newly formed Cleveland Ballet Orchestra under the direction of Caleb Young. Tickets are available online.

Segal’s works are regularly performed by many orchestras and ensembles including the Berliner Symphoniker, London Mozart Players Orchestra, Ukraine National Philharmonic Orchestra, and The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. [Read more…]

The Cleveland Opera: Moniuszko’s Straszny dwór at the Ohio Theater (June 16)

A rare operatic treat graced the Ohio Theatre at Playhouse Square on Saturday, June 16: a single performance of Stanisław Moniuszko’s 19th-century, Polish-language gem Straszny dwór. Designed to celebrate the centenary of Polish independence, this traditionally-staged production with Cleveland Ballet added up to an uneven evening. [Read more…]

Opera Circle Cleveland goes al fresco in the Italian Cultural Garden July 31

OCCItalianGardens2015If you were to travel to Italy in the summer and jaunt through their Renaissance gardens, you would hear the Italian people speaking their lovely language, water rushing through fountains, and concerts of gorgeous music. That delightful atmosphere will waft through Cleveland’s Italian Cultural Garden during a special opera concert of operatic arias and ensemble numbers on Sunday, July 31 at 6 pm.

“Opera in the Italian Garden” will be presented by Opera Circle Cleveland and the Cleveland Ballet, carrying on the tradition that originally began in the 1930s, and was revived in 2008. “We thought that nobody was going to show up,” said Joyce Mariani, Executive Director of the Italian Cultural Garden Foundation, over a recent telephone call. “But over 200 people came. The next year it more than doubled to 500, and last year we had an audience of 2,000. The audience makes the event what it is. We just present it.” [Read more…]
