Six play Cooper Piano Competition Recital Round at Oberlin (July 18)

Although they didn’t have to pass through trials by silence, water, and fire like Papageno, the six young pianists remaining in the draw on Wednesday evening, July 18 at the Thomas and Evon Cooper International Piano Competition reached the recital round by surviving earlier sessions that had trimmed the original 31 performers down to 16, then to 10. With no questions remaining about their technical aptitude, it was up to these six to prove their musical and interpretive mettle and their ability to communicate their ideas to the jury in 30-minute solo programs. Three finalists named in Cooper Piano Competition

Following the recital round in Oberlin’s Warner Concert Hall on Wednesday, the jury for the Thomas and Evon Cooper International Piano Competition announced the three finalists who will play concertos with Jahja Ling and The Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall on Friday evening at 7:30 pm, and named the 4th, 5th, and 6th-place winners and the recipients of the Audience Prize.

The final three are Tony Yun, (left, 17) of Toronto, Canada, Yunchan Lim (center, 14) of Siheung-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, and Kai-Min Chang (right, age 17) of Changhua County, Taiwan.Yun will play Tchaikovsky’s First Concerto. Concerto Round at the Thomas and Evon Cooper International Piano Competition, Tuesday, July 17

The 2018 Thomas and Evon Cooper International Piano Competition got underway on Saturday morning, July 14, when thirty-one young pianists played the first of two Semifinal Rounds in Warner Concert Hall at the Oberlin Conservatory. On Sunday evening the field was narrowed to fifteen. On Tuesday, July 17, the remaining ten competitors played full concertos, and without a doubt, this was the strongest field of young pianists the Competition has put forward to date. Oberlin-Cooper-BannerTen young pianists, ages 13-17, advanced to the Concerto Round of the Thomas and Evon Cooper International Piano Competition at Oberlin’s Warner Concert Hall on Tuesday, July 19. In afternoon and evening sessions, the jury and audience heard performances of concertos by Sergei Prokofiev (No. 3, three times), Edvard Grieg (twice), Sergei Rachmaninoff (No. 2, twice), Ludwig van Beethoven (Nos. 1 and 4) and Frédéric Chopin (No. 1). Paul Schenly, chairman of the Jury, announced the winners of the Cleveland International Piano Competition’s Young Artist Competition following the final round on Thursday evening with Gerhardt Zimmermann and the Canton Symphony Orchestra in Gartner Auditorium of the Cleveland Museum of Art.

First Prize, Senior Division ($25,000):  Yuanfan Yang, 18, U.K. (right in photo, with executive director Pierre van der Westhuizen). First to play was Ziaoxuan Li (13, China), with a portfolio of pieces by J.S. Bach (Prelude & Fugue in B-flat from WTC I), Robert Schumann (Kinderszenen) and Rodion Shchedrin (“Invention in Two Parts” and “Basso Ostinato” from Polyphonic Notebook).

CIPC Young Artists Competition Junior and Senior Divisions, Second Round (May 16)

CIPC-Young-Artists-Logo2The Junior Division continued with its second round on Saturday, May 16, at 10:00 am in Gamble Auditorium.

Nina Yifang Hu (14, USA) kicked things off with an engaging performance of Liszt’s “La campanella” from his Grandes études de Paganini, which she followed with a nicely-shaped and well-voiced rendition of Chopin’s Nocturne No. 8 in D-flat Major, Op. 27, No. 2. Hu was in her element during Liebermann’s Gargoyles, Op. 29, playing with sensitivity and wonderful technique.

CIPC Young Artist Competition Semifinalists named

Twelve young pianists will advance to the semifinal rounds in the Cleveland International Piano Competition’s Young Artist Competition. Sessions will take place on Monday afternoon and evening, May 18 (Junior Division) and Tuesday afternoon and evening, May 19 (Senior Division) in Gamble Auditorium at the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory.
