HAPPENING TODAY:
At 12:00, organist Jonathan Moyer will perform on the Church of the Covenant’s Tuesday Noon series, bringing with him a program titled “Lumen Christi.” It includes music by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Georg Böhm, Olivier Messiaen, Jehan Alain, and Jean Langlais. A freewill offering will be taken up. See our Concert Listings for details.
PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES:
First, a reminder that the deadline to apply for the Tuesday Musical Scholarship Competition is tomorrow, February 1. Scholarships are available for aspiring performers as well as aspiring music educators.
And while that Competition is aimed at college students, the Dana School of Music has announced an opportunity for high school students, who are invited to join the YSU Pep Band for a day and perform at a YSU basketball game. You have two choices: February 11 (a date which also includes workshops and performances for color guard and majorettes) and February 18. Click here for more information and here to register. INTERNSHIP & VOLUNTEER POSTINGS:
Piano Cleveland is seeking a Marketing and Social Media Intern to assist with the promotion and coverage of this summer’s Cleveland International Piano Competition and Institute for Young Artists. Applications are due February 10th.
And Assembly for the Arts is looking for volunteers to help survey audiences at arts and culture events throughout Cuyahoga County through April 2023. “Surveys are part of a national economic impact study to demonstrate that an investment in the arts provides both cultural and economic benefits that help communities thrive.” Sign up here.
TODAY’S ALMANAC:
Franz Schubert was born on this date in 1797 in Vienna, while Philip Glass followed suit in 1937 in Baltimore. The connections don’t stop there: Glass has cited Schubert as an important influence, and in an interview in 2011, he even called Schubert his favorite composer.
Some see a bit of Schubert’s lied Du bist die Ruh in Glass’s solo piano work Mad Rush — both works open with oscillating minor thirds — and even suggest that Glass was making an allusion. Click those links to listen and decide for yourself.
Another pairing for today: Schubert and American tenor Mario Lanza, who was born on this date in 1921 in Philadelphia. A popular actor as well, Lanza sings Schubert’s Ave Maria in a scene from the 1956 film Serenade. Watch here.
Finally, a heads up about two opportunities to hear the music of Schubert this week in Northeast Ohio. On Wednesday at 7:30 pm, the CIM Orchestra will play the Rosamunde Overture at Severance Hall. And on Sunday, tenor Salvatore Champagne and keyboardist David Breitman will take on the song cycle Winterreise at Kulas Recital Hall in Oberlin. See our Concert Listings for details.
