Israel Philharmonic to join roster of Violins of Hope performances on November 16
Cleveland—September 8, 2014.
The Cleveland Orchestra announced today that the Israel Philharmonic, led by its music director, Zubin Mehta, will perform in Severance Hall on Monday, November 16 at 7:30 pm as part of the Violins of Hope Project. The event, part of an eight-city tour of the United States, will be presented in collaboration with the Jewish Federation of Cleveland. [Read more…]
Jeremy Reynolds named Young Writer Fellow
Jeremy Reynolds is serving as ClevelandClassical.com’s 2015 Young Writer Fellow during the month of June. He recently completed his Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Bachelor of Music in Clarinet Performance at Oberlin College and Conservatory. During his senior year, Reynolds was accepted to the Pi Kappa Lambda and Golden Key national honor societies. After editing the arts section of the Oberlin Review during the Fall of 2014, Reynolds became a staff writer for the Spring of 2015. He will enter the Goldring Arts Journalist Program at Syracuse University beginning in July. After receiving his master’s degree, Reynolds hopes to build a career writing about music.
H. Leslie Adams wins Lifetime Achievement Award
Among the recipients of the 2015 Cleveland Arts Prize, to be presented on Thursday, June 25 at 6:00 pm in Gartner Auditorium of the Cleveland Museum of Art is composer H. Leslie Adams. A graduate of Oberlin College, California State University Long Beach and the Ohio State University, Adams will receive the Lifetime Achievement Reward of $10,000 for bringing great distinction to himself and the region over the course of several decades. CIPC Young Artists Winner to open Indians Season April 10
Arianna Körting, who won first prize in the senior division of the 2012 Cleveland International Piano Competition’s Young Artists Competition, will play the National Anthem at Progressive Field on Friday, April 10 just after 4:00 pm, when the Cleveland Indians play their season opener against the Detroit Tigers.
A CIM graduate, Körting is now studying for her bachelor’s degree at Juilliard. The 2015 CIPC Young Artists Competition for pianists ages 12-18 will run from May 12-21 at Baldwin Wallace and at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Hartke to chair Oberlin composition department
Stephen Hartke will become Professor of Composition and Chair of the Composition Department at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music on July 1, 2015. Hartke, who draws his inspiration from sources ranging from medieval music to the blues, comes to Ohio after serving as Distinguished Professor of Composition at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California, where he has taught since 1987.

Cleveland Orchestra: Lintu to replace Sokhiev January 29-31
Tugan Sokhiev has withdrawn as conductor from concerts by The Cleveland Orchestra on January 29, 30 and 31 on the advice of his physician. He will be replaced by Finnish conductor Hannu Lintu, who is currently chief conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra.
Cleveland Orchestra: DeYoung to replace Schwanewilms for Boulez celebration
Mezzo-soprano Anne Schwanewilms is indisposed and unable to travel to Cleveland for The Cleveland Orchestra’s January 15 tribute to Pierre Boulez on his 90th birthday. Michelle DeYoung (left) will replace Schwanewilms for Alban Berg’s Three Excerpts from Wozzeck. The balance of the one-night-only program at Severance Hall next Thursday remains as originally announced.
