CIPC for Young Artists Senior winner: A conversation with Saehyun Kim

A native of Seoul, South Korea, 16-year-old Saehyun Kim is no stranger to international competitions — in 2022 he won First Prize at both the Morningside Music Bridge International Concerto Competition and the New England Conservatory (NEC) Preparatory School Concerto Competition.

Kim has appeared as a soloist with the Sendai Philharmonic, and Korean Symphony, and was invited to give interviews and performances for national music channels such as JTBC Classic Today and KBS Classic FM. Currently he is a Young Scholar of the Lang Lang International Music Foundation and a junior at Walnut Hill School for the Arts, studying with HaeSun Paik, faculty at the New England Conservatory.

On Saturday July 15, Kim added another win to his list when he was awarded First Prize ($10,000) in the Senior Division of the Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists. He was also awarded the Audience Prize, Senior Division ($500) and the Junior Jury Prize, Senior Division ($500).

CIPC for Young Artists Junior Winner: A conversation with Elisey Mysin

Born in Stavropol, Russia, 12-year-old Elisey Mysin began studying piano at the age of four. He currently attends the Central Music School in Moscow where he is a student of Natalia Trull and Daniil Tsvetkov.

Mysin has already amassed several wins at international competitions including First Prize at the 2022, 4th Zhuhai International Mozart Competition for Young Musicians in China, and has performed concertos with the State Symphony Orchestra of Leningrad, and the Russian National Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Mysin has appeared at many festivals including the Baikal Stars, InClassica International Music Festival (Dubai, UAE, 2021), and Bieszczady bez granic (Sanok, Poland, 2022, main prize of the festival).

On Saturday July 15, Mysin added another win to his list when he was awarded First Prize ($5,000) in the Junior Division of the Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists. He was also awarded the Audience Prize, Junior Division ($500) and shared the Mozart Prize (tie, $250 each) with Yanyan Bao (16, China).

Piano Cleveland: CIPC for Young Artists Prizes awarded after final round (July 15)

After the final concerto round with Steven Byess and the Canton Symphony in Gartner Auditorium of the Cleveland Museum of Art on Saturday evening, July 15, Piano Cleveland president Yaron Kolhberg announced the prize winners of the 2023 Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists.

Piano Cleveland: CIPC for Young Artists Chamber Music Final Round (July 13)

The six pianists who advanced to the final round of Piano Cleveland’s International Competition for Young Artists cleared the first hurdle on their way to winning first, second, and third place prizes with performances in the Chamber Music Round on Thursday evening in Mixon Hall at the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Demonstrating how well they can play with others, the finalists performed single movements of piano trios with members of The Cleveland Orchestra, collaborations that couldn’t help but inspire them to new heights.

For this round, the Juniors enjoyed the expertise of violinist Yun-Ting Lee and cellist Martha Baldwin, cello, while the Seniors joined forces with violinist Jessica Lee and cellist Dane Johansen. I attended via the live webcast. [Read more…]

Piano Cleveland: Gabriela Montero at Reinberger (July 9)

Surely one of the highlights of Piano Cleveland’s International Piano Competition for Young Artists this summer will turn out to have been an inspiring guest recital by the amazing Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero.

In Reinberger Chamber Hall at Severance on Sunday evening, July 9, Montero presented pristine, penetrating performances of works from the literature, followed by four ingenious improvisations on musical material submitted by the audience. I watched the recital via the excellent live webcast.

Seated Radu Lupu-style on a straight-backed chair at the Steinway, Montero began with an exploratory journey through Chopin’s Polonaise Fantasy in A-flat, followed by Schumann’s intense portraits of the characters who showed up for the masked ball in his Carnaval. After intermission, she gave a finely etched and effortless reading of Stravinsky’s Piano Sonata with carefully managed dynamics.  [Read more…]

The Final Six: Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists

This summer Piano Cleveland has turned its attention to the stars of the future. Earlier this week the six finalists — three in the Junior Division (ages 11 -14) and three in the Senior Division (ages 15 – 18) — were selected to come to Cleveland for the Final Round of the Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists.

Qinyaoyao Ji (13, China), Elisey Mysin (12, Russia), and Zhonghua Wei (14, China) will vie for the top cash prize of $5,000 USD while Yanyan Bao (16, China), Ryan Wang (15, Canada), and Saehyun Kim (16, South Korea) will compete for the first prize of $10,000 USD.

The six were selected from 32 contestants who recorded their First Rounds performances at locations in London, Hamburg, Cleveland, New York, Beijing, and Seoul, in partnership with Steinway & Sons galleries. Competition Review: CIPC for Young Artists — Semifinal and Final Rounds (June 5, 6 & 8)

JuniorSemiFinalScreenShotThe Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists brought 22 pianists (ages 12-17) from 11 countries to Cleveland beginning on May 30. By the beginning of the semifinals on Tuesday, June 5, six remained in the junior half of the draw, and seven in the senior. CIPC Announces Senior Finalists

CIPCSeniorFinalists2018Following the senior semifinal rounds at the Cleveland Institute of Music on Wednesday, June 6, the Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists announced the three pianists who will advance to the senior half of the final round with the Canton Symphony on Friday evening: JiWon Yang, 16 (South Korea), Xiaoxuan Li, 16 (China), and Shuan Hern Lee, 15 (Australia).

In performance order, here are the six finalists and their concertos (first movements only). Junior Division: Yunchan Lim (Chopin’s Concerto No. 1); Eva Gevorgyan (Grieg’s Concerto); Hao Wei Lin (Chopin’s Concerto No. 1). Senior Division: JiWon Yang (Grieg’s Concerto); Xiaoxuan Li (Chopin’s Concerto No 2); and Shuan Hern Lee (Grieg’s Concerto). The finals will be broadcast live over WCLV Ideastream, 104.9 FM and prizes will be announced and awarded at a ceremony in Gartner Auditorium at the Cleveland Museum of Art on Saturday evening at 7:30 pm. CIPCJuniorFinalists2018Following the junior semifinal rounds at the Cleveland Institute of Music on Tuesday, June 5, the Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists announced the three pianists who will advance to the final round with the Canton Symphony on Friday evening. They are, from left to right, Eva Gevorgyan, 13 (Russia), Yunchan Lim, 13 (South Korea), and Hao Wei Lin, 13 (Taiwan). The senior semifinal rounds will be held in Mixon Hall on Wednesday, June 6 at 1:00 and 7:00 pm, with the finalists to be named after the evening session. More information and live stream here.

CIPC to present duo pianists Ran Dank and Soyeon Lee

DANK-SOYENLife has been good for Ran Dank and Soyeon Kate Lee since they won medals at the Cleveland International Piano Competition in 2007 and 2003, respectively. Since those wins, both pianists have enjoyed successful careers as solo artists, as well as holding positions as Assistant Professors of Piano at the Cincinnati College- Conservatory of Music.

This week Dank and Lee will showcase their skills as duo pianists when they return to Cleveland for a performance on Thursday, June 7 at 8:00 in Mixon Hall at the Cleveland Institute of Music. The concert is presented as part of the Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists, which began last week and runs through Saturday, June 9.

The Duo’s program will include works by Mozart, Scriabin, Janáček, and Liszt as well as a four-hands version of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. “It’s a special piece for us because we played it at our wedding concert in New York City,” Lee said during a joint telephone call with Dank. “A wedding is sort of a rite,” he added with a laugh. “But you can’t quite call the piece an arrangement because parts of it were originally conceived for four hands. So in some ways, the orchestrated version is the arrangement in the same way Ravel would orchestrate his piano works.”
