Cleveland Chamber Music Society brings some favorites back for its 2016-2017 season at Plymouth Church

juilliard-quartet-2016-2For its 67th season, the Cleveland Chamber Music Society will present its customary lineup of seven world-class chamber music groups — plus a young artists showcase and a young artists competition. You won’t see the names of any new ensembles on the roster for 2016-2017, but there’s a major personnel change and an interesting realignment of musicians that will be of primary interest to chamber music lovers.

“I’m looking forward to the new configuration of the Juilliard String Quartet (pictured left),” said CCMS president Barbara Green in a telephone conversation last weekend. “It’s the first time the Juilliard have included a woman [cellist Astrid Schween, who replaces Joel Krosnick], and I’ve heard every permutation since the very beginning. And then there’s the Cleveland debut of the Montrose Piano Trio, which includes violinist Martin Beaver and cellist Clive Greensmith — the two remaining members of the Tokyo Quartet — plus pianist Jon Kimura Parker, who played for CCMS some years ago with the Berlin Philharmonic Woodwind Quintet.” [Read more…]

A few days before the Jerusalem Quartet’s concert at Plymouth Church on February 24, the ensemble’s home city got buried in a rare 10 inches of snow, with more in the forecast. Perhaps that brought Cleveland and Jerusalem into a special meteorological kinship as well as a musical one. Certainly, there were a lot of warm feelings being passed back and forth between musicians and audience during the quartet’s excellent performance on Tuesday evening on the Cleveland Chamber Music Society series. Cleveland Chamber Music Society: Jerusalem String Quartet (Feb. 24)

Jerusalem-Quartet-(Felix-Broede)Sometimes personalities and musical sensibilities between members of a chamber music ensemble just seem to click. Such is the case with the acclaimed Jerusalem Quartet, who first came together while still in high school. But according to violinist Alexander Pavlovsky, at that time, becoming a world-class string quartet was the furthest thing from their minds. “We did not think a lot about the future. We were only concentrating on building a repertoire and enjoying every moment of being part of such an amazing ensemble.”

On Tuesday, February 24 at 7:30 pm at Plymouth Church, the Jerusalem Quartet, made up of Alexander Pavlovsky and Sergei Bresler, violins, Ori Kam, viola, and Kyril Zlotnikov, cello, will return to the area for a concert for the Cleveland Chamber Music Society, their third appearance on the series since 2010. The program features Mozart’s Quartet in G, K. 387, Schulhoff’s Five Pieces and Schumann’s Quartet No. 3 in A, op. 41, no. 3. David Rothenberg will give a pre-concert lecture beginning at 6:30 pm.
