Saxophonist Jacob Swanson at Gowanda’s Historic Hollywood Theater

Since the Pandemic forced the shutdown of many performance venues, musicians have sought out ways of using their art to give something back to their communities. During November, saxophonist Jacob Swanson, returned to his hometown of Gowanda, New York, to record a recital at the town’s Historic Hollywood Theater that will be streamed until January 13, 2021 as a fundraiser for the historic venue — click here for details. Trinity Cathedral’s BrownBag Concert Series turns 40

trinity-jake-sarahSince the BrownBag Concert Series at Trinity Cathedral presented its first concert in January of 1978, it has firmly established itself as an integral part of Cleveland’s vibrant music scene. Today the series hosts over 5,000 guests annually, from newborns to centenarians.

On Wednesday, October 4 at 12:00 noon, Music and Art at Trinity will kick off the 40th anniversary of the free series with a concert featuring the Trinity Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Todd Wilson and a return visit by the dynamic saxophone duo Jake & Sarah. The program includes music by Handel, Quantz, Glazunov, and Koch, as well as the world premiere of Nathan Hall’s Forces of Change, a concerto for solo saxophone and string orchestra.

“It’s a remarkable achievement for any concert series to go on for 40 uninterrupted years, and with such a high degree of success,” Todd Wilson, the Cathedral’s organist and director of music, said during a telephone conversation. [Read more…]

Trinity Brownbag Concerts begin with duo-saxophone concert October 5

trinity-jake-sarahA fixture of the Cleveland classical music scene since 1978, the popular Trinity Cathedral Brownbag Concerts will kick off their 2016-17 season on Wednesday, October 5 at 12:10 pm. Saxophonists Jake Swanson and Sarah Marchitelli will join Todd Wilson and Trinity Chamber Orchestra in performances of works by Eric Ewazen, Alexander Glazunov, and Erland von Koch.

“It’s been a busy year for us,” Jake Swanson said during a recent telephone conversation. “Sarah and I had a residency in Oslo, Norway, and my first CD was released earlier this month. And we’re excited to be returning to the Brownbag Concert series.” [Read more…]

Brownbag Concerts at Trinity: Jake and Sarah to premiere Dan Knorr’s double saxophone concerto

Jake-and-SarahSince January of 1978 the free Brownbag Concert series at Trinity Cathedral has provided a mid-week respite from everyday life for music lovers of all ages. On Wednesday, October 7 at 12:10 pm, Music  and Art at Trinity will kick off their new season with a return visit of saxophonists Jake Swanson and Sarah Marchitelli, more popularly known as “Jake and Sarah.”

The duo will perform three works with the Trinity Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Todd Wilson. The program will include Johann Joachim Quantz’s Trio in c minor (arr. Sigurd Raschèr), Erland von Koch’s Concerto Piccolo (1962), and the world premiere of Dan Knorr’s Double Concerto (2015). Decho-EnsembleWhen the Belgian instrument maker Adolph Sax invented the instrument that bears his name in 1840, it’s unlikely that he imagined the many ways the saxophone would be employed by musicians of differing musical genres. On Sunday, July 19 at the Bop Stop, the excellent Decho Ensemble (Jacob Swanson, soprano sax, Sarah Marchitelli, alto sax, Nicholas Child, tenor sax, Jared Yackiw, baritone sax) played a concert of music on vintage instruments that highlighted the saxophone’s classical origins, as well as celebrated the 200th anniversary of the birth of Adolph Sax. Decho Ensemble celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Adolph Sax (July 18 and 19)

Decho-EnsembleThe saxophone duo “Jake and Sarah” are no strangers to Cleveland audiences. “We have really grown to love the city,” Jake Swanson told us in an interview prior to their October 2014 performances at Trinity Cathedral and Lorain Country Community College’s Signature Series. “The audiences are not only so sophisticated, they are also so open to new things.” This week Jake Swanson and Sarah Marchitelli will return to Cleveland along with their Decho Ensemble colleagues, saxophonists Nicholas Childs and Jared Yackiw, for two performances that celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the inventor of the saxophone, Adolph Sax. The concerts take place on Saturday, July 18 at 7:00 pm in Tucker hall at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and Sunday, July 19 at 3:00 pm at the Bop Stop.

“We keep finding ourselves back in Cleveland. It’s become like a second home to us,” Swanson said during a recent telephone conversation. “We’re very excited about this program. It’s a lot of fun, and it celebrates the early tradition of our instruments.” The concerts will include the first work ever written for saxophone quartet, Jean Baptiste Singelée’s Premier Quaturo, Op. 53, and another early work for sax quartet by American composer Caryl Florio. Classical saxophonists Jake & Sarah to open LCCC Signature Series October 13

Jake-and-SarahAlthough the saxophone is not commonly thought of as a classical instrument —most tend to think of it as a jazz and rock instrument — the classical saxophonists Jake Swanson and Sarah Marchitelli like to remind people that it was the classical romantic music scene of the mid-1800’s where the instrument was born. On Monday, October 13 at 7:30 pm in the Studio Theatre in the Stocker Center for the Arts, Jake & Sarah will return to Northeast Ohio to open the 2014-15 season of Lorain County Community College’s Signature Series.
