Three finalists named in Cooper Piano Competition

Following the recital round in Oberlin’s Warner Concert Hall on Wednesday, the jury for the Thomas and Evon Cooper International Piano Competition announced the three finalists who will play concertos with Jahja Ling and The Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall on Friday evening at 7:30 pm, and named the 4th, 5th, and 6th-place winners and the recipients of the Audience Prize.

The final three are Tony Yun, (left, 17) of Toronto, Canada, Yunchan Lim (center, 14) of Siheung-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, and Kai-Min Chang (right, age 17) of Changhua County, Taiwan.Yun will play Tchaikovsky’s First Concerto. Lim will be featured in Chopin’s Second Concerto. Chang will solo in Chopin’s First Concerto. [Read more…]

Cleveland Orchestra musicians play on CVNP Conservancy Series (July 17)

The Happy Days Lodge welcomed musicians from The Cleveland Orchestra with special guest Eric Wong into its wide-beamed hall on Tuesday, July 17, at 7:00 pm. Oberlin Milt Hinton Bass Institute: Final concert in Warner Hall (July 13)

Concerto Round at the Thomas and Evon Cooper International Piano Competition, Tuesday, July 17

The 2018 Thomas and Evon Cooper International Piano Competition got underway on Saturday morning, July 14, when thirty-one young pianists played the first of two Semifinal Rounds in Warner Concert Hall at the Oberlin Conservatory. On Sunday evening the field was narrowed to fifteen. On Tuesday, July 17, the remaining ten competitors played full concertos, and without a doubt, this was the strongest field of young pianists the Competition has put forward to date. Six Advance to Recital Round in Cooper Piano Competition

Following the concerto round on Tuesday, the jury for the Thomas and Evon Cooper International Piano Competition announced the six competitors who will play 30-minute recitals on Wednesday, July 18 at 7:00 pm in Warner Concert Hall at the Oberlin Conservatory (performance order to be determined). Admission is free. The session will be broadcast live by WCLV 104.9 ideastream, and will be streamed live here. The three finalists who will play concertos with Jahja Ling and The Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall on Friday evening will be announced late on Wednesday evening,.

Blossom Music Center: opening a summer home for The Cleveland Orchestra (second of three articles)

50 years ago, the Cleveland-Akron area was bursting with anticipation of Blossom Music Center’s opening on July 19, 1968. For the two weeks leading up to the inaugural performance –– which began with The Star Spangled Banner and continued with Beethoven’s Consecration of the House Overture and the Ninth Symphony –– newspapers ran a continuous flow of previews to hype the event. Articles about the coupon books being sold (tickets were only $2 for the lawn), the relaxed dress code (an Akron Beacon Journal headline read “Wear what you please”), and the planned broadcast of the program in color on Channel 3 and on WCLV-FM, all added to the excitement. Kent Blossom Music Festival: Miami Quartet with Spencer Myer (July 11)

If the Miami String Quartet’s performance with pianist Spencer Myer last week could have come with a motto, it might have been “never underestimate Haydn.” In a concert at the Kent Blossom Music Festival, where the Quartet’s members have long served as faculty, the opener — a quartet from the late 1790s — stole the show from Romantic and contemporary fare. Following the second semifinal round on Monday, the jury for the Thomas and Evon Cooper International Piano Competition announced the ten competitors who will play full concertos with collaborative pianists on Tuesday, July 17 at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm in Warner Concert Hall at the Oberlin Conservatory. Kent Blossom Chamber Orchestra:
A conversation with Vinay Parameswaran

This weekend The Cleveland Orchestra turns its attention to young musicians. On Friday, July 20 at 7:30 pm at Severance Hall, the three finalists from the Cooper International Piano Competition will perform complete concertos with The Cleveland Orchestra under the direction of Jahja Ling. Tickets available online.

The following evening, July 21 at Blossom Music Center, Ling and The Orchestra will focus on the participants in the 50th annual Kent Blossom Music Festival. The concert will begin at 7:00 pm, when Vinay Parameswaran will lead the Kent Blossom Chamber Orchestra in Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1 (Classical) and de Falla’s Suite No. 1 from The Three-Cornered Hat.

At 8:00 pm that student ensemble will join The Cleveland Orchestra and Jahja Ling in a side-by-side performance of Berlioz’s Overture to Benvenuto Cellini, and Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music featuring the Blossom Festival Chorus. The marathon event will continue around 9:00 pm when Ling and TCO return to the stage for Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 (“Titan”).   [Read more…]
