DIARY: Thanksgiving Weekend, November 23-26, 2023

HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND:

The Cleveland Orchestra welcomes guest conductor Pietari Inkinen and violinist Augustin Hadelich (pictured) for Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto & Antonîn Dvořák’s Othello Overture and Symphony No. 8 on Friday at 7:30, Saturday at 8, and Sunday at 3 at Severance Music Center.

Then on Sunday at 2, Carl Topilow & the Cleveland Pops Orchestra & Chorus will kick off the Holidays at the Connor Palace Theatre in Playhouse Square Center with seasonal faves, a sing-along, & dancing Santas, plus adoptable puppies and kittens from area shelters.

Further afield, the Youngstown edition of TubaChristmas takes place on Sunday at 3:30 in the Grand Ballroom of Stambaugh Auditorium.

And back home in University Circle on Sunday at 4, organist Jonathan W. Moyer will present  “Prelude & Fugue — five masterworks by J.S. Bach,” with commentary by Rabbi Roger C. Klein, at the Church of the Covenant. [Read more…]

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

After his performances of September in the Rain, Lush Life, and Every Day I Have the Blues on Sunday at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, 2023 Oberlin graduate Tyreek McDole was named the winner of this year’s Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, taking home the grand prize of $5,000.

Reviewing the event for London Jazz News, Morgan Enos wrote, “Clearly, McDole doesn’t just have a way with the blues; he has a sinuous and companionable way with them.” Read the review here.

Assembly for the Arts will hold its Quarterly State of the Arts on December 6 at Karamu House. “Stay up to date on the most recent creative-industry-wide information over a meal and good company. We share updates on industry data trends, public policy, artist funding, racial equity initiatives, and more. As Assembly continues its work to expand resources and increase equity in Cleveland’s arts and culture scene, weigh-in on what you’d like to see.” Register here.

A new guide has been published to help parents, educators, administrators, policymakers, and advocates navigate the Ohio Arts Education Data Dashboard, which provides information about arts education offerings at the school, district, county, and statewide levels. Arts @ Holy Trinity, Akron: Organist Peter Sykes (Nov. 19)

The last time that Boston-based organist Peter Sykes played at Akron’s Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, his program featured his own arrangement of Gustav Holst’s The Planets.

On Sunday afternoon, November 19, Sykes returned to help celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Arts @ Holy Trinity concert series with an engaging program of miniatures by William Byrd, Max Reger, and Louis Vierne, introduced and concluded by big works by Dietrich Buxtehude and Johann Sebastian Bach.

With a nod to his hosts and a twinkle in his eye, Sykes quipped in his opening remarks that his concert would begin and end with pieces by Lutherans. [Read more…]

Danish String Quartet at Cleveland Chamber Music Society (Nov. 14)

Could the prodigiously talented players of the Danish String Quartet all be drinking from some magic source? By now among the world’s finest quartets — perhaps taking the top rung left by the Emerson Quartet after their recent retirement — they perform with such easy excellence and intuitive musical consensus that you wonder: is this the product of hard work and long hours of rehearsal, or some magic potion?

Neither strain nor sweat were visible in the program for the Cleveland Chamber Music Society on November 14 at Disciples Christian Church, which included works by Mozart, Britten, Adès, and their own folk arrangements.

Pietari Inkinen to make Cleveland Orchestra debut

“I am thrilled to be making my debut with this wonderful orchestra,” Pietari Inkinen said. “The Cleveland Orchestra is one of the greatest in the world and for any conductor it is an honor to be invited to conduct in Cleveland.”

On Friday, November 24 at 7:30 pm at Severance Music Center, the Finnish conductor will lead The Cleveland Orchestra in Dvořák’s Othello Overture and Symphony No. 8, as well as Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto with Augustin Hadelich as soloist. The program will be repeated on Saturday at 8:00 and Sunday at 3:00. Tickets are available online.

Born in Kouvola, Finland, Inkinen began studying the violin and piano at the age of  four. He attended the Sibelius Academy, where he graduated with diplomas in violin in 2003 and conducting in 2005, and also studied violin at the Hochschule für Musik Köln. As a violinist, he has appeared as soloist with many orchestras including the Finnish Radio Symphony and Helsinki Philharmonic, and as a chamber musician he has appeared with the Inkinen Trio at the Wigmore Hall and St. John’s Smith Square.

Yesterday, The Cleveland Orchestra announced details of the second Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Opera & Humanities Festival, which will take place at Severance Music Center and partner locations throughout Cleveland from May 15 to 26, 2024.

HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND:

On Saturday at 7:30, Khari Joyner (pictured) solos with Christopher Wilkins & the Akron Symphony in Antonín Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in E.J. Thomas Hall. At 8 pm Apollo’s Fire plays concertos by Vivaldi and Bach at St. Paul’s, Cleveland Hts., and Carl Topilow takes Cleveland Pops on “A Mediterranean Cruise,” embarking from Severance Music Center. Also on Saturday at 8, CUSP presents experimental music by Jelly Ear & Ishmael Ali at Convivium 33 Gallery.

It’s a busy Sunday afternoon with pianist Marc-André Hamelin in recital at 3 pm in Reinberger Chamber Music Hall at Severance Music Center, and the final performance of Handel’s Alcina at CIM. Heights Chamber Orchestra led by Frank Wiley performs with pianist Donna Lee at 3:30 at Fairmount Presbyterian, and four performances are scheduled for 4 pm — Apollo’s Fire at University Circle United Methodist Church, Boston-based organist Peter Sykes at Akron’s Holy Trinity Lutheran, violist Jordan Bak with the Cavani Quartet at St. Wendelin in Tremont, and Samuel Gordon’s Singers Companye with the VoxMix Chamber Ensemble at The Bath Church.

HAPPENING TODAY:

This evening at 7:30, Jinjoo Cho (pictured) will be featured in Barber’s Violin Concerto with BlueWater Chamber Orchestra at Church of the Covenant (previewed here).

At the same hour, Jeannette Sorrell will lead Apollo’s Fire in the second of four performances of “Fire and Joy: from Bach and Vivaldi” at Lakewood Methodist featuring Debra Nagy, oboe, Alan Choo, violin, & Nicole Divall, viola d’amore (read a preview here) in works by J.S. Bach and Vivaldi.

Also on Friday at 7:30, CIM Opera Theater presents the first of two performances of Handel’s Alcina in Kulas Hall (read a preview here), and Opera Western Reserve stages Carmen at Powers Auditorium in Youngstown.

No Exit: “Surreal Games” (Oct. 14)

To celebrate their 15th anniversary No Exit has created their most ambitious project to date. Their season-long series Surreality encompasses a range of artistic media to present an immersive, multidisciplinary exploration of surrealism as expressed in music, art, film, poetry, literature, and performance art.

The series kicked off with “Surreal Games,” which took its inspiration from the parlor games and thought exercises employed by the Surrealists. The program featured world premieres of musical works interspersed with poetry, as well as a corresponding art installation titled Collaborage, which was on view at Heights Arts. I attended the performance at SPACES on October 14.
