As goes the Blossom Festival, so goes the Kent Blossom Music Festival, the parallel educational program that each summer brings young musicians to the Kent State University campus for several weeks of intensive chamber music coaching by members of The Cleveland Orchestra and other musicians.
In a normal season, multiple student concerts would be on the docket as well as faculty recitals, and a student chamber orchestra would be sharing an al fresco program with The Cleveland Orchestra. But in this thoroughly abnormal summer, nothing will be happening in person either at Blossom or Kent State. Instead, KBMF will be offering five streamed broadcasts of concerts from its archives on Wednesdays beginning July 1.

Wednesday, July 1 at 7:30 pm – Concert 1 with the Miami String Quartet & Spencer Myer, piano. Haydn’s Quartet No. 64 in D (“Largo”), Op. 76, No. 5, Beethoven’s Piano Quartet in E-flat, Op. 16 & Max Bruch’s Quartet No. 1 in c, Op. 9.
Wednesday, July 8 at 7:30 pm – Concert 2 with Jennifer Koh, violin, 2017 Kulas Guest Artist. J.S. Bach’s Sonata No. 2 in a, BWV 1003 & Partita No. 2 in d, BWV 1004, Missy Mazzoli’s Dissolve, O My Heart & Luciano Berio’s Sequenza VIII.
Wednesday, July 15 at 7:30 pm – Concert 3 with members of *The Cleveland Orchestra, Festival Young Artists, and faculty. Samuel Barber’s Summer Music, Op. 31, Nicolas Roussakis’ Six pieces for two flutes (*Mary Kay Fink & *Jessica Sindell), Jean-Michel Damase’s Trio for Oboe, Horn and Piano (Danna Sundet, *Alan DeMattia & Elizabeth DeMio), Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 1 in E-flat, Op. 12, Erwin Schulhoff’s Divertimento for oboe, clarinet and bassoon (*Frank Rosenwein, *Afendi Yusuf & *Barrick Stees), & Brahms’ Piano Quintet in f, Op. 3.

Wednesday, July 29 at 7:30 pm – Concert 5 with members of The Cleveland Orchestra, Festival Young Artists, Kent State faculty, the Emerson String Quartet, and Met Opera Principal Cello Jerry Grossman. Carl Reinecke’s Sextet for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Two Horns and Bassoon, Op. 271, Enrique Granados’s Intermezzo from “Goyescas,” Gaspar Cassadó’s Requiebros, Astor Piazzolla’s Le Grand Tango, Ravel’s Pièce en forme de Habanera & Piazzolla’s Libertango (*Richard Weiss, cello & *Joela Jones, piano), Beethoven’s Sextet in E-flat, Op. 71 (Young Artists with *Afendi Yusuf, *Barrick Stees & *Hans Clebsch) & Schubert’s Quintet in C, D. 956 (Emerson Quartet: Eugene Drucker & Philip Setzer, violins, Lawrence Dutton, viola, & Paul Watkins, cello, with Jerry Grossman, cello).
