Conductor Robert Cronquist, who led the Cleveland Women’s Orchestra for 28 years until his recent retirement, died on September 11. He also served as conductor of the Mansfield Symphony for 22 seasons, and the Lakeside Symphony for 47. A service will be held on Wednesday, September 19 at 11:00 am at Rocky River Methodist Church. Cleveland Orchestra suspends La Rosa
Several media outlets reported on Saturday that Cleveland Orchestra principal trombone Massimo La Rosa has been suspended in conjunction with an ongoing investigation into sexual harassment prompted by the July 26 Washington Post report that resulted in the suspension of concertmaster William Preucil. Cleveland POPS Orchestra Scholarship Competition
The 20th annual Jean L. Petitt Memorial Music Scholarship will be held on Sunday, November 4 from 5:00-8:00 pm at CIM. Open to young singers, dancers, and instrumentalists up to age 18 residing and attending high school in the 7-county Greater Cleveland region, the competition offers a cash award and an opportunity to appear with Cleveland POPS Orchestra. Babayan signs recording contract with DG
Sergei Babayan, artist-in-residence at the Cleveland Institute of Music since 1992, is entering into an exclusive recording agreement with Deutsche Grammophon. The initial project will pair Mozart sonatas with solo works from different periods, and future recordings will explore works by J.S. Bach and Rachmaninoff, as well as rarely-heard repertoire and contemporary works. [Read more…]
Music Settlement announces new partnership with Cavani Quartet & Peter Salaff
Bravo Chamber Music is the title of a new, 12-week Cleveland Music Settlement program to be directed by Cavani String Quartet members Annie Fullard, Mari Sato, and Eric Wong, along with violinist Peter Salaff and distinguished guest artists. The course, open to string players ages 10-18, will run from September 27 through December 16, and include coaching sessions, special seminars, and master classes, culminating in a public performance. Blue Streak challenge grant for Voice of the Lake
Cuyahoga Arts and Culture has awarded a $5,000 challenge grant to the Blue Streak Ensemble toward production costs of a professional video recording of Margaret Brouwer’s Voice of the Lake, to bring her oratorio about Lake Erie’s ecological challenges to a wider audience. Matching donations must be received by September 19. The revised oratorio will be performed at the Cleveland Institute of Music on October 19.
Oberlin Conservatory to begin year with World War I Festival Sept. 8 & 9

Bernhardsson, who joined the Conservatory faculty last year after 17 seasons touring with the Pacifica Quartet, was seized by the idea of marking the 100th Anniversary of the cessation of hostilities, using Oberlin’s deep musical and scholarly resources to explore the music surrounding the Great War. “Looking at the number of great chamber pieces that were written during the era, not only are they all very different, some are clearly about the war while other composers were writing as though there was no war going on at all. This became a fascinating thing to me,” he said.
The violinist broached the idea of a festival with Oberlin musicology professor Charles McGuire early last spring only to discover that McGuire, who is in charge of Oberlin’s Murphy Colloquium, had already been talking with his colleagues about mounting a panel discussion about World War I music. “That seemed fortuitous,” McGuire said in a separate telephone conversation. “It’s always better to plan a scholarly panel if it’s surrounded by great music, and Sibbi’s very enthusiastic — a whirlwind when he sinks his teeth into something.” [Read more…]
