KBF-5-1The fifth and final faculty concert of the 2017 Kent/Blossom Music Festival in Kent’s Ludwig Concert Hall on Wednesday evening, July 26, contrasted bracing 20th century music for wind duo with a heartwarming Romantic cello sonata. Oboist Frank Rosenwein, bassoonist Barrick Stees, and cellist Richard Weiss stepped out of their normal roles in The Cleveland Orchestra for the occasion, joined by KSU professor Jerry Wong, who contributed refreshingly varied mini-sonatas for solo piano. Cooper Violin Finals at Severance Hall (July 21)

CooperThree 2017On Friday evening, July 21, Severance Hall was the final destination for Christina Jihee Nam, Qing Yu Chen, and Johan Dalene, the three young violinists left standing in Oberlin’s Thomas and Evon Cooper International Violin Competition. Apollo’s Fire Artist Profile: violinist Susanna Perry Gilmore

suzannegilmoreThis summer, Apollo’s Fire audiences have had the opportunity to hear violinist Susanna Perry Gilmore explore two dimensions of her musical persona that aren’t part of her day job as concertmaster of the Omaha Symphony Orchestra — and which Jeannette Sorrell and Cleveland’s Baroque Orchestra are largely responsible for developing.

Perry Gilmore appeared as a folk fiddler in “Mediterranean Roots” during the month of June, then turned to Baroque violin as soloist in the “Summer” concerto of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. The Vivaldi program was presented twice earlier this month in Northeast Ohio before going on tour to Youngstown and the Tanglewood, Gretna, and Ravinia Festivals. The show returns for two final performances at Cain Park and Laurel School’s Butler Campus on July 29 and 30.

How did the violinist originally become involved with Apollo’s Fire? “It was a serendipitous meeting,” Perry Gilmore said in a telephone conversation, explaining that Sorrell had made a guest appearance with the Omaha Symphony in the spring of 2014 in an all-Vivaldi program. [Read more…]

Three advance to Final Round at Oberlin Cooper Violin Competition

CooperThree 2017Following the recital round on Wednesday, July 19, the Jury of the Oberlin Cooper International Violin Competition advanced three competitors to Friday evening’s 7:30 pm Final Round with Jahja Ling and The Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall. Performances will be broadcast live on WCLV, 104.9 FM and wclv.com.

In order of appearance, Qing Yu Chen, 17, USA, will play Prokofiev’s Concerto No. 2 in g, Op. 63; and Johan Dalene, 16, Sweden, and Christina Jihee Nam, 14, USA, will each be featured in Tchaikovsky’s Concerto in D, Op. 35. (L-R: Nam, Dalene, and Chen. Photo: Roger Mastroianni.)

Prizes of $1,500 each conferred on Wednesday evening included:

Six advance to Recital Round at Oberlin Cooper Violin Competition

Oberlin-Cooper-BannerFollowing the concerto round on Tuesday, July 18, the Jury of the Oberlin Cooper International Violin Competition advanced six competitors to Wednesday evening’s 7:00 pm Concerto Round in Warner Concert Hall at the Oberlin Conservatory. Each will play a 30-minute recital. Three competitors will advance to Friday evening’s final round with Jahja Ling and The Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall. Performances will be live streamed here and broadcast live on WCLV, 104.9 FM and wclv.com.

Each will play a full concerto with piano. Six competitors will advance to Wednesday’s Recital Round. Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom: Milhaud, Roussel & Beethoven (July 15)

TCO-FWM-070917-1Dionysius and Apollo each reigned over half of the Cleveland Orchestra program at Blossom on Saturday evening, July 15 under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst. Albert Roussel’s Suite No. 2 from Bacchus and Ariadne celebrates the invention of wine — for which picnickers on the Blossom lawn will be ever grateful — and Darius Milhaud’s Brazilian-infused ballet Le boeuf sur le toit takes place in a rowdy New York bar during Prohibition. Even with its premonitions of Romanticism and the composer’s signature quirkiness, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 brought a sense of Classical balance to the second half. [Read more…]

Cleveland Orchestra “Best of Broadway” — fifteen minutes with vocalist Richard Todd Adams

ADAMS-Richard-ToddVocalists Christina DeCicco, Ted Keegan, Ron Remke, and Richard Todd Adams will join guest conductor Jack Everly and the Blossom Festival Chorus at the Blossom Music Center on Sunday, July 16 at 7:00 pm for “The Best of Broadway.” The playlist includes selections from famous musicals by Irving Berlin, Lerner and Loewe, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Leonard Bernstein, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, including — to name a few — Oklahoma!, The Phantom of the Opera, The Music Man, Les Misérables, and Candide.

We reached Ricky Todd Adams by telephone at his home in New Jersey to find out how his career trajectory took him to Broadway and national tours of long-running shows — in the Lloyd Webber universe, he’s one of the few American actors to have played the Phantom, as well as Jean Valjean, and Javert.
