Rosenwinkel is joined by pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Eric Revis, and drummer Gregory Hutchinson.

There are two options, both at 7:30 pm. You can hear the music of ABBA in Canton, where the Canton Symphony will be joined by Jeans n’ Classics, an ensemble dedicated to bringing rock music to orchestras. Purchase tickets here.

Or you can head to Oberlin, where guitarist Stephen Aron will play music by John Dowland, Federico Moreno Torroba, Frédéric Chopin, Antonio Lauro, and Aron himself in Kulas Hall as part of the Conservatory’s faculty recital series. It’s free.

HAPPENING TODAY:

“When you’ve been booking visiting chamber ensembles for seven decades, you develop some special relationships that regularly bring audience favorites back to town,” Daniel Hathaway writes in a preview of the Cleveland Chamber Music Society’s first concert of the season. 

That category of artists certainly includes pianist Wu Han, violinist Philip Setzer, and cellist David Finckel, who will play Schubert’s two piano trios in Kulas Hall at the Cleveland Institute of Music tonight at 7:30 pm. Roger Klein will give a pre-concert lecture at 6:30. Tickets are available here.

HAPPENING TODAY:

Although there are no concerts on the schedule today, there is a free teaching workshop to check out, particularly recommended for those in grades 3-7. It’s titled “Get Your Groove On,” and it’s about the rhythms that tie together music, poetry, and dance.

Kimberly Zaleski (flute, vocals), Trevor Kazarian (cello, vocals, beatbox), and Dylan Moffitt (percussion, mixed media) of the Cleveland-based group 1N2ATIV3 will be joined by hip-hop dancer and choreographer Christian Townsend, who freestyles to the beats and improvisations of the ensemble. The workshop is presented by CityMusic Cleveland, and is held on Tuesday evenings in September from 6-7 pm at the Woodland Rec Center.

At 7:30 pm, The Cleveland Orchestra gives the first of two send-off concerts before embarking on a three-week tour of Europe. This evening’s program at Mandel Hall includes Wolfgang Rihm’s Verwandlung II & III and Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9. (Tomorrow’s program swaps out those works for music by Richard Strauss and Alban Berg.) Get your tickets here.

Not so much a concert, but another event of interest on the calendar today is a free Arts & Culture Network Night at the LGBT Center in Gordon Square from 6-8 pm, hosted by Neighborhood Connections and Cuyahoga Arts & Culture. It’s aimed at artists, art supporters, and anyone who works at an arts-related organization, and there will be a performance by flamenco dancer Alice Blumenthal, founder of Northeast Ohio-based dance company ABREPASO. COOPER WINNERS:

The results of the Cooper International Competition came in late on Friday evening, August 19. In the final round — a performance with the Canton Symphony under Gerhardt Zimmermann — Seohyun Kim (13, Seoul) played the Brahms Violin Concerto en route to winning First Prize.

That award comes with $20,000, a two-year partnership with MKI Artists (to include up to ten engagements in concerto or recital settings in the U.S.), and the opportunity to give the world premiere of a new six-minute work for violin and orchestra by Jeff Scott. Kim will also have exclusive rights to the piece for two years, during which time she will be loaned a rare Italian instrument from Jonathan Solars Fine Violins of New York.
