CMA Centenary Weekend features Alarm Will Sound & Cleveland Orchestra

AWS-AtriumOn Saturday afternoon, June 25, the Cleveland Museum of Art continued its centenary celebration with musical events commemorating the Summer Solstice. At 3:00 pm in the Ames Family Atrium, the New York-based new music ensemble Alarm Will Sound presented an alluring performance of John Luther Adams’s Ten Thousand Birds. Written for the Ensemble and designed by its artistic director Alan Pierson, the work follows the cycle of a day, beginning with morning bird songs before moving into the afternoon, evening, and night, ultimately returning to morning. His Drums of Winter, Wail, Inuksuit, and Veils and Vesper have recently been heard in venues ranging from concert halls to Lake View Cemetery. On January 29, David B. Earth and Air BelisleWhen conductor David B. Ellis chose to call his new ensemble Earth and Air: String Orchestra, the name called out for a program dedicated to music inspired by nature. On Friday, January 29, beginning at 7:30 pm in Tucker Hall at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights, audiences will have the rare opportunity to experience composer John Luther Adams’ In the White Silence when Ellis leads Earth and Air in the 75-minute work.

Cleveland is no stranger to John Luther Adams’ works. Many may remember the composer’s Veils and Vesper and Inuksuit, two lengthy immersion pieces that the Cleveland Museum of Art staged at Historic St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ohio City and at Lakeview Cemetery in September of 2014. Cleveland Museum of Art opens its performing arts series on September 20 & 21 with works by John Luther Adams

Adams-John-LutherThis weekend the Cleveland Museum of Art Performing Arts series will begin its new season with two events featuring the music of 2014 Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Luther Adams.

On Saturday, September 20 beginning at 7:00 pm in Historic St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ohio City, The Alaskan-based composer will discuss Veils and Vesper, two distinct but related electronic soundscapes that create an immersive listening experience over a period of six hours. The evening includes a “sneak preview” of the work followed by a meet-and-greet reception. The event is free and all are welcome. Audiences can experience Veils and Vesper on Fridays and Saturdays from 12:00 noon to 6:00pm beginning on Friday, September 26. [Read more…]
