Karel Paukert & Noa Even open Ars organi II at St. Paul’s (Sept. 29)

Karel Paukert has been an intrepid and fierce advocate for contemporary music in Cleveland for the better part of fifty years. Although he has retired from his position as Curator of Musical Arts at the Cleveland Museum of Art, he continues as the organist and choirmaster at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights. Oberlin Cantata Project puts Bach’s church cantatas in perspective

Oberlin-Cantata-ProjectBeginning this Saturday, Oberlin student Matt Bickett will be putting Johann Sebastian Bach’s church cantatas into context with his Oberlin Cantata Project. Bickett will lead an ensemble of mainly student singers and instrumentalists in three performances of Bach’s cantata Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, BWV 80, that will surround the work with Dietrich Buxtehude’s Alles was ihr tut and Johann Pachelbel’s Gott ist unser Zuversicht — other pieces that might have been heard during the same service at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig.

The Cantata Project will be presented on Saturday, October 28 at 7:30 pm at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights, on Sunday, October 29 at 6:30 pm in Warner Concert Hall in Oberlin, and on Sunday, November 5 at 5:00 pm at the Church of the Covenant in Cleveland. Paukert plans Ars Organi to celebrate music program at St. Paul’s, Cleveland Hts.

PAUKERT-KarelBoth during his tenure as curator of musical arts at the Cleveland Museum of Art (1974-2004), and since 1979 as organist at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights, Karel Paukert has combined unerring musical taste with an uncanny ability to acquire splendid keyboard instruments. The three organs and harpsichord owned by St. Paul’s will be the subject of Ars Organi, a seven-event festival beginning on September 15 that matches the instruments with the particular interests of some of Paukert’s colleagues, friends, and students.

“I don’t want to say this is my swan song,” Paukert said in a telephone conversation,  “but I want to pay homage to St. Paul’s Church and its generous donors with this festival. They have maintained this music program all the way back to Walter Blodgett, who was kind of a legend here.”

St. Paul’s Church moved to the Heights from 40th and Euclid in 1928, but the Great Depression and World War II delayed its building plans beyond the construction of a parish hall until 1952. [Read more…]

American Boychoir to sing concerts in Oberlin & Cleveland Heights

AmericanBoychoirAccording to American Boychoir music director Fernando Malvar-Ruiz, the title for the Princeton, New Jersey-based ensemble’s upcoming tour, “How Can I Keep from Singing?” reflects exactly why its members join. “The boys come to the American Boychoir School because they love singing,” Malvar-Ruiz said during a recent telephone interview. “In many cases they just can’t stop singing. Their parents tell me that they sing all of the time.”

On Friday, April 15 at 7:00 pm at Christ Church Episcopal in Oberlin, and on Sunday, April 17 at 4:00 pm at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights, Malvar-Ruiz will lead The American Boychoir in a program ranging from music by Felix Mendelssohn to Samuel Barber, to folksongs from around the world and traditional American hymns and spirituals.
