It was a battle of the early twenty-somethings last evening and judging from this impressive group the future of the piano is in good hands.

During Liszt’s Étude de concert, S. 144, No. 2 (“La leggierezza”) Ye played with an expansive sound, The cascading, Lisztian scale passages were tasteful and full of charm, like a music box. The concluding major chords — perfectly balanced. Ye concluded her set with a thoughtful performance of Chopin’s Etude in a, Op. 25, No. 11 (“Winter Wind”). Kicking off the 2021 edition of the Competition was Lin Ye (28, China) who demonstrated his ample technical ability in Chopin’s Etude in A Minor, Op. 25, No. 11 (“Winter Wind”). His well-balanced chords in the opening led into the fast section that emphasized the virtuosic passages rather than the famous repeated theme.
TODAY’S EVENTS:
Composer and flutist Hong-Da Chin has carved out a unique career. His music is influenced by folk music from his native Malaysia as well as Chinese and Indian cultures. A specialist in contemporary music, he is equally at home on modern and traditional Chinese flutes.
The moment has arrived. After a year-long postponement, Piano Cleveland’s signature event — the Cleveland International Piano Competition (CIPC) — will take place from July 7 through August 11. The 2021 competition will be hybrid, including pre-recorded First and Second Rounds with Semi-Final and Final Rounds taking place in Cleveland.

The weather on Sunday morning, June 13, was bright and sunny but not too hot — perfect for a ChamberFest lawn concert. Not to miss out on the occasion, a multitude of people, lawn chairs in hand, made their way down Guilford Road in Cleveland Heights to hear a wonderfully varied program titled Bach and More.
On Wednesday, June 16 at 7:00 at The Grove Amphitheatre, ChamberFest’s theme of the evening was Luscious Soundscapes and included music by Richard Strauss and Amy Beach.
After a year’s absence, The Cleveland Orchestra will return to the stage of Blossom Music on Saturday, July 3 and Sunday, July 4 at 8:00 pm. Under the direction of Brett Mitchell, the concerts will also mark the first time the full orchestra has performed in front of an in-person audience since March of 2020.
