CityMusic Cleveland: Brouwer’s Viola Concerto with Eliesha Nelson in Rocky River (Oct. 27)

The peripatetic CityMusic Cleveland Chamber Orchestra was founded with the admirable mission of bringing free performances of classical music to various corners of metropolitan Cleveland.

Having already taken their interesting program of works by J.S. Bach, Margaret Brouwer, and Johannes Brahms to Fairmount Presbyterian Church in Cleveland Heights, St. Noel Church in Willoughby Hills, and the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus in Slavic Village, CityMusic ended its most recent progress around town at Our Lady of Angels in Rocky River on Sunday afternoon, October 27. Cleveland Orchestra delights Halloween and Christmas fans alike with early holiday concert (Nov. 1)

CLEVELAND, Ohio — This year, the Cleveland Orchestra has virtually every store, shopping mall, and local radio station beat in being the first to break out the Christmas music.

The day after Halloween may be too early for most Ohioans to start getting into the holiday spirit, but it’s the perfect time for Jack Skellington and the charmingly creepy stop-motion cast of the 1993 animated film “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”

Die-hard fans have often debated during which season the movie should be shown – Halloween or Christmas? You could say the Cleveland Orchestra came up with something of a clever compromise, presenting “Nightmare” live in concert along with the airing of the movie on Friday, Nov. 1 at Severance Music Center. It was a single sold-out performance.

Discovering the magic of water-inspired music with Tan Dun and the Cleveland Orchestra (Oct. 31)

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The gusty winds that buffeted Severance Music Center on Halloween night seemed an apt complement for music about the elements. Inside, though, the focus was on a different force of nature: water, both literal and figurative.

On the podium was composer-conductor Tan Dun, making his Cleveland Orchestra debut in a program that will be repeated on Saturday, November 2. With the composer himself present, it was only fitting that the ensemble should give the Cleveland premiere of two of his pieces: the Water Concerto and Concerto for Orchestra.

HAPPENING TODAY: 

Tonight at 7, No Exit New Music hosts the Meridian Arts Ensemble in Daniel Grabois’ Drift, Moshe Shulman’s Subito, George Lewis’s Tightrope, Joseph Haydn’s Feldpartie, and David Sanford’s Credo, free at Trinity Cathedral.

The Cleveland Orchestra continues its Beethoven Piano Concerto Cycle with a repeat of Wednesday’s program: the Triple Concerto (Orion Weiss, piano, Augustin Hadelich, violin, and Julia Hagen, cello) and Concerto No. 3 (Sir Stephen Hough, soloist — pictured). 7:30 in Mandel Concert Hall at Severance Music Center.

And at 8 pm, Oberlin Opera Theater raises the curtain on the first of four performances of Jules Massenet’s Cendrillon (Cinderella), directed by Stephanie Havey, with James Feddeck conducting the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra (repeated in Hall Auditorium Friday & Saturday at 8 & Sunday at 2).

“Meditations and Mysticism” opens Cleveland Chamber Choir season (Oct. 26)

It somehow seemed wrong to clap and cheer at the end of Cleveland Chamber Choir’s “Meditations and Mysticism” program on October 26. Less a concert than an administering of musical healing, the event left us feeling more like sitting quietly and sipping measured breaths to prolong our newfound tranquil state.

In a program of ten carefully conceived and sequenced musical episodes, artistic director Gregory Ristow brought a politically weary crowd some much-needed spiritual succor and peace through music. [Read more…]

Jorge Caballero presents concert influenced by Spirituals for the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society (Oct. 26)

The theme of the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society’s latest concert season emphasizes the new and different — with plenty of debuts, contemporary works, and creative ways of looking at music. That was the case on October 26 for Jorge Caballero’s program. All three pieces he brought to the Maltz Performing Arts Center were rare to hear, each for different reasons.

Thomas Flippin’s music has become a common appearance on CCGS programs, and the premiere of his Poor Mourner’s Got a Home at Last was certainly welcome. [Read more…]

HAPPENING TODAY:

If you need an excuse to escape into the solace of live music today, thankfully there are a few options.

At 12:00 noon, Trinity Cathedral’s BrownBag Series presents “Opera by Day” with Jacqueline Josten and Kira McGirr. At the same time, organist Florence Mustric performs music by Charles-Marie Widor at Music Near the Market.

Tonight at 7:30, The Cleveland Orchestra kicks off their Beethoven Piano Concerto cycle with some new additions: conductor Daniel Reith and pianists Orion Weiss and Sir Stephen Hough. Read more about those personnel changes here; tickets available online.

And at 7:00 pm at Treelawn Music Hall, Piano Cleveland Live@50 presents Daria Rabotkina in collaboration with Yaron Kohlberg.

No Exit: New Season, New Sounds at SPACES Gallery (Oct. 19)

No Exit New Music’s events are like carefully curated art shows, and come complete with printed programs that more resemble exhibition catalogs than what you’d normally be handed at the door of a concert venue.

It takes some space to present the often complex back stories of contemporary works, and the ensemble’s triad of October programs, simply titled “New Season, New Sounds” was accompanied by a colorful, artsy, 39-page booklet that could become a collector’s item.

I joined a good-sized and enthusiastic audience to attend the third performance at SPACES Gallery on Saturday evening, October 19. [Read more…]

Seraph Brass visits Rocky River with their newest member

Seraph Brass welcomed Layan Atieh as their newest core member two months ago — but it may as well have been a lifetime. “I feel like I’ve known them forever,” Atieh said about her new colleagues in a recent interview. “We spend so much time together, I feel like I know everything about them.”

2024 has been quite the busy year for the French horn player, who graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Music shortly before winning her audition to be part of the all-female brass quintet. She also recently moved to Chicago to take up a position with the Civic Orchestra there.

But Atieh can’t stay away from Northeast Ohio for too long — and on Monday, November 11 at 7:30 pm, she’ll perform with Seraph Brass for the Rocky River Chamber Music Society. No Exit welcomes Meridian Arts Ensemble back to Cleveland for three concerts

For over three decades the Meridian Arts Ensemble has been enthralling audiences with their virtuosic performances of envelope pushing repertoire. This week the Meridian — Jon Nelson and Matthew Onstad (trumpets), Daniel Grabois (horn), Faustino Díaz Mendez (trombone), and Tom Curry (tuba) — will return to Cleveland courtesy of No Exit.

Performances are on Thursday, November 7 at Trinity Cathedral, Friday, November 8 at The Bop Stop, and Saturday, November 9 at Baldwin Wallace University’s Kulas Music Hall. The program will include Daniel Grabois’ Drift (2021), Moshe Shulman’s Subito (2009), George Lewis’s Tightrope (2023), Franz Joseph Haydn’s Feldpartie (1780), and David Sanford’s Credo (2021). All performances begin at 7:00 pm and are free.
