CD Review — Sutte & Fuoco’s
“SonataPalooza” continues with Vol. II

Two players, twelve sonatas, four recitals, eleven days. That was the formula for Mettle: SonataPalooza I, a project from trumpeter Jack Sutte and pianist Christine Fuoco that was first heard in January 2019 at Baldwin Wallace Conservatory, where they both teach — and that continues to be heard in the recordings that came from those recitals.

The halfway point of this ambitious endeavor came last year with the release of Volume II, another rewarding listen whether you’re looking to bone up on trumpet sonatas or just here to enjoy a finely tuned duo.

As a guide to gift-giving (and don’t we all need a little help!), enjoy a chronological look over the CD reviews our correspondents have written over the last twelve months — plus a look ahead at some reviews to come in early 2022.

Note that many of these recordings are available as downloads rather than physical discs. And while streaming platforms are invaluable resources, it’s important to remember that payments received by the artists are generally small (and ridiculously confusing to calculate in some cases!)

Trumpeter Jack Sutte and pianist Christine Fuoco are on a mission to bring trumpet sonatas into the mainstream classical music conversation, beyond just the dialogue of trumpet players. To that end, they’ve embarked on a long-term collaboration, both onstage and in the recording studio. Mettle: SonataPalooza I – Vol. I is the first disc to come of this project, and represents quite the convincing opening argument.

The Cleveland Orchestra brass were busy with Bruckner the prior weekend, but then on Sunday, March 1, The Orchestra’s second trumpet player, Jack Sutte, played a recital at Christ Church Episcopal in Hudson, part of Music from The Western Reserve’s 2019–2020 concert series. His program emphasized artistry over athleticism and served as a good reminder that sensitive, sustained solo playing naturally differs from the big orchestral approach. [Read more…]

Music from The Western Reserve enters a new era under Bognár

For 36 seasons, Music from The Western Reserve has presented chamber music concerts of a variety of genres performed by Northeast Ohio’s brightest talent. The organization is now entering a new era as it embarks on season number 37 with a new general manager, and a new lineup of performances.

After Elisabeth Hugh made the decision to retire following over a decade of leadership, Music from The Western Reserve and its board of directors recently announced that Zsolt Bognár, pianist and host of the award-winning film series Living the Classical Life, would succeed Hugh as Artistic Director and General Manager.

In a press release, Chair of the search committee Linda McDonald said that “Zsolt brings energy and passion to his work. We interviewed so many talented people for the position, but Zsolt’s skills and experience were the best fit as the organization moves to its next stage.” [Read more…]
