12:15 pm – Wednesday Noon Organ Concert by Florence Mustric. “The Spice of Life”: a set of variations by Pachelbel and music by Americans Samuel Barber, Derek Healey, and Charles Ives. Beckerath organ. Trinity Lutheran Church, W. 30th & Lorain, Cleveland. Freewill offering.

7:30 pm – Kent/Blossom Faculty Concert. Imani Winds (2024 Grammy Winner for Best Classical Compendium). Ludwig Recital Hall, Kent State University, 1325 Theatre Drive, Kent. Tickets available online.

8:00 pm – Salute to America. Galen S. Karriker leads the Blossom Band in a mix of patriotic marches, Broadway favorites, an Armed Forces Salute, and more — concluding with a spectacular fireworks display.  Blossom Music Center, 1145 W Steels Corners Rd, Cuyahoga Falls. Tickets available online.

ChamberFest Cleveland: “Night Moves” at Disciples Church (June 28)

It was nice to finally hear one of ChamberFest Cleveland’s “Sacred and Profane” concerts (“Night Moves” on June 28) in a religious setting — Disciples Church in Cleveland Heights — since it helped the “sacred” music resonate (in more ways than one). As the home of the Cleveland Chamber Music Society’s concerts, it’s a well-loved space to experience chamber music.

It turns out, though, you don’t necessarily need a church — or even voices — to convey the spirituality of the opener, Palestrina’s 1572 motet, Dominus Jesus in qua nocte.

Take 6 opens Tri-C JazzFest 2024 (June 20)

If there’s anything to be said about legendary acapella sextet Take 6, it’s that the group has most certainly still got it. This was apparent on the evening of June 20 as the ensemble took the stage at the Mimi Ohio Theatre at Playhouse Square. The concert was the perfect introduction to Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland 2024, with a timeless musical performance and an incredible level of energy to boot.

Conductor Brett Mitchell returns to Blossom Music Center

“To say that once again being asked to conduct The Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom is an honor would be a gross understatement,” Brett Mitchell said during a telephone interview. “I am not often at a loss for words, but there really aren’t any to describe how much it means to me.”

On Saturday, July 6 at 7:00 pm Mitchell will return to the Blossom podium to lead The Orchestra in Leonard Bernstein’s Three Dance Episodes from On the Town, William Grant Still’s Symphony No. 1, “Afro-American,” and Samuel Barber’s Overture to The School for Scandal. The program also includes George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue in Béla Fleck’s transcription for banjo and orchestra with Fleck as soloist. Tickets are available online.

Mitchell said he loves Rhapsody in Blue. But when the Orchestra told him that they didn’t want the symphonic version that is often played by orchestras he thought they might be considering the original Paul Whiteman jazz band version. “It turned out that what they wanted was Béla Fleck’s transcription where he plays the piano part on the banjo.”

At 2 pm, Ohio Light Opera presents a matinee performance of Frank Loesser’s Guys and Dolls in Freedlander Theatre at the College of Wooster.

And at 6:30, the Canton Symphony’s Summer Serenades present an outdoor performance by a string quartet at Lawrence Township Park in North Lawrence.

The Friends of the McGaffin Carillon in University Circle write, “There are only a few more weeks to hear The McGaffin Carillon (pictured) before it is disassembled in mid-August in preparation for a complete restoration and renovation. ChamberFest Cleveland: a four-course meal during “Innocence and Experience” (June 26)

ChamberFest Cleveland’s June 26 concert had stiffer competition than usual, with The Cleveland Orchestra simultaneously performing for Wade Oval Wednesdays right down the street. But you wouldn’t have known it from the packed house that filled Mixon Hall that evening at the Cleveland Institute of Music.

The program, titled “Innocence and Experience,” marked the long-awaited festival debut of guitarist Jason Vieaux. (Although the venue was no doubt familiar to him — he’s taught at CIM since 1997.) Vieaux and his fellow musicians kicked off the program with Luigi Boccherini’s Guitar Quintet No. 4 in D, a lively piece with the subtitle “Fandango.”

ChamberFest Cleveland: Lost in Paradise (June 21)

The theme of the June 21 ChamberFest concert may have been “Paradise Lost,” but the performances and repertoire were of such high caliber, there was nowhere you would rather have found yourself.

A joyful noise opened the concert. J.S. Bach’s Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen featured soprano Sarah Shafer and trumpeter Brandon Ridenour in a sparkling account of the cantata Bach liked so much that he designated it as suitable for performance “in ogni tempo” — at any time.
