Quire Cleveland to sing Monteverdi’s Mantuan masterpieces at St. John’s Cathedral

monteverdiThink of the early Baroque Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi, and images of Venice and its highly photogenic Piazza San Marco inevitably pop up — especially if the work in question is the Vespers of 1610. But he didn’t write his most famous piece for the Most Serene Republic. Monteverdi composed the Vespers, along with the opera Orfeo, his first five books of madrigals, and the Missa in illo tempore when he was in the employ of the Gonzaga family in Mantua, until the family’s declining economic situation made him a free agent in 1612.

Ross W. Duffin and his twenty professional singers of Quire Cleveland will explore Monteverdi’s Mantuan legacy in a free concert at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in downtown Cleveland on Friday evening, September 30 at 7:30 pm. [Read more…]

Emerson String Quartet to launch Tuesday Musical series with premiere

It’s even better when that work is performed by one of the world’s greatest chamber music ensembles. On Tuesday, September 27 at 7:30 pm at E.J. Thomas Hall in Akron, Tuesday Musical will present the opening concert of its season. The evening will feature the world premiere of English composer Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Shroud performed by the Emerson String Quartet, Eugene Drucker and Philip Setzer, violins, Lawrence Dutton, viola, and Paul Watkins, cello. Cleveland Museum of Art announces 2016-2017 Performing Arts schedule

Brett Mitchell to take the helm of the Colorado Symphony

mitchell-mastroianniThe Colorado Symphony announced on September 12 that Brett Mitchell has been appointed music director designate for the 2016-2017 season, and will assume the post of music director in July, 2017. “It’s a great opportunity to be the Music Director of a great orchestra in a great city,” Mitchell said during a recent telephone conversation. “I don’t know how you could ask for more than that. Hiroya Tsukamoto to present solo guitar concert at Bop Stop

tsukamotoWhen guitarist Hiroya Tsukamoto presents his solo concert at the BOP STOP on Thursday, September 22nd at 8:00 pm, audiences will hear music that has been described as ‘cinematic guitar poetry.’ His music has also been referred to as ‘earthy, organic soundscapes that impart a mood of peace and tranquility.’

Mark Kosower and Jee Won Oh plan a tribute to Alberto Ginastera at CIM

Kosower & Oh“Alberto Ginastera’s career was made in America and his name became famous both here and in Europe,” said cellist Mark Kosower in a recent telephone conversation. “But his music just isn’t performed enough and he’s not taken with the same seriousness as European composers. He’s rooted in tradition, but in the second part of his career he became cutting-edge, writing in new ways all the time. I think that’s a model for any modern composer.” The Cleveland Orchestra’s principal cellist will join his wife, pianist Jee-Won Oh, in a celebration of the Argentine composer’s 100th birth anniversary on Friday, September 23 at 8:00 pm in Mixon Hall at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Akron Symphony to open its new season on September 24 with pianist Antonio Pompa-Baldi

pompa-baldi“Rachmaninoff’s Third Concerto is an amazing piece,” pianist Antonio Pompa-Baldi said during a recent telephone conversation. “It’s very difficult to express thoughts about such a work of art in a few words.” On Saturday, September 24 at 8:00 pm at Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall, Pompa-Baldi will perform Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Akron Symphony under the direction of Christopher Wilkins. Cleveland Institute of Music to celebrate the legacy of composer/conductor Pierre Boulez

French composer and conductor Pierre Boulez passed away on January 5, 2016, at the age of 90. In his obituary the following day, The Guardian (London) wrote:

Pierre Boulez was arguably the single dominant figure of the classical musical world through the second half of the 20th century and beyond. Without his compositions, his legacy of recordings as a conductor, his writings on music, and his administrative skill and drive, the musical scene today would be of a quite different order.”

On Sunday, September 25 at 4:00 pm in Mixon Hall, the Cleveland Institute of Music will present the first of seven events celebrating “The Boulez Legacy.” [Read more…]

Cleveland Chamber Music Society: a chat with Montrose Trio cellist Clive Greensmith

montrose-piano-trioWhen cellist Clive Greensmith last visited the Cleveland Chamber Music Society in November of 2012, he appeared with the Tokyo Quartet. Soon thereafter, when that ensemble’s longtime members Kikuei Ikeda and Kazuhide Isomura decided to retire, Greensmith and violinist Martin Beaver at first decided to audition a new violinist and violist, but later resolved to let that estimable quartet fade into chamber music history. Then, a conversation with Jon Kimura Parker, the Tokyo Quartet’s frequent collaborative pianist, led to the creation of a new piano trio which eventually took on the name of the musicians’ favorite French wine, Chateau Montrose.
