M.U.S.i.C. – Stars in the Classics at Praxis Fiber Workshop & Gallery

Since presenting its first concert in 2005, providing performance opportunities for emerging musicians in Northeast Ohio is the driving principle behind M.U.S.i.C. (Musical Upcoming Stars in the Classics).

That tradition will continue on Saturday, September 27 at 4:00 pm when eleven young musicians present “A Classical Cabaret in Collinwood” at Praxis Fiber Workshop and Gallery in the Collinwood Arts District. The concert is free.

“There’s so much great music out there,” M.U.S.i.C’s founder and Artistic Director Jodi Kanter, said during a telephone conversation. “This program will feature music by American and Latin composers.” [Read more…]

Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project (CUSP) begins new season

For lovers of Cleveland’s contemporary music scene, there is perhaps no group more acutely on the cutting edge than the Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project. The genre-blending organization, founded in 2017 and under the stewardship of Stephan Haluska (pictured, left) since 2021, has provided ample space for Cleveland’s new music artists to strut their stuff for the better part of a decade.

Now, as part of their 2025-26 run, they are continuing these groundbreaking traditions. On September 26 at 8pm, the project will play host to synthesist and composer Matthew Ryals, as well as the local piano, harp, and electronic trio of Harper/Haluska/Oicherman (featuring CUSP’s own director), for an evening of sonic mobility and spontaneity. I spoke with Haluska about the upcoming performance, as well as the past, present, and future of CUSP.

“I’ve known him for a long time,” said Haluska of headliner Matthew Ryals, whose fully improvised recording “Exalge” was released earlier this month. When Haluska learned that his friend’s tour would be stopping in Northeast Ohio, the lightbulb went off in his head. “Matthew studied classical guitar at CIM and has since moved to New York, but we’ve always kept in touch. He reached out to me about coming through Ohio, and of course I jumped at this opportunity. He’s someone who I’ve wanted to work with before, but we haven’t really had the opportunity until now.” [Read more…]

Cleveland Chamber Music Society opens 76th season with James Ehnes & Orion Weiss

After celebrating three quarters of a century in the concert presenting business with an extended season that drew large audiences to the Art Museum for the Jerusalem Quartet’s complete Shostakovich string quartet cycle — fifteen quartets in five concerts in April — the Cleveland Chamber Music Society will return to a more normal but equally enticing season in 2025-2026.

In addition to revisits by the Belcea and Takács Quartets, perennial favorites, the society will present some relatively new ensembles: the Leonkoro and Verona Quartets and the Isidore String Quartet, two of them with guest pianists. Yaron Kohlberg — head of Piano Cleveland, the driving force behind the Cleveland International Piano Competition — will join the Verona for the Dvořák Quintet, and Jeremy Denk will collaborate with the Isidore in the Brahms Quintet. Cleveland Silent Film Festival opens with Phantom of the Opera centennial screening

The Cleveland premiere of Phantom of the Opera, starring Lon Chaney, lit up the screen at the Stillman Theatre on Sunday, January 17, 1926. In his Plain Dealer review, W. Ward Marsh wrote: “If your heart is strong, I recommend it to you. If your heart isn’t so strong, go see this film anyway, to find out how strong it is.”

On Sunday, September 14, the Cleveland Silent Film Festival & Colloquium will open its 2025 edition with that iconic film. The special screening at 3:00 pm in Gartner Auditorium at the Cleveland Museum of Art will celebrate Phantom’s 100th anniversary and feature its original score, performed live by American Musical Productions’ 17-piece orchestra conducted by Joseph Rubin.

Lon Chaney’s performance as the Phantom still captivates a century later, while the music of the original 1925 orchestral score brings the gothic grandeur of Gaston Leroux’s tale to life.

A Musical Patchwork, Rather Than a Melting Pot

When Clay Ross moved to New York City in 2002, he encountered people from all over the world during jam sessions at the popular jazz clubs.

“It was like a United Nations of talent,” says the South Carolina native, who moved to the city to pursue a jazz career. After learning where he grew up, “people would often say, ‘Oh, you must really know a lot about American folk music and country music,’ because they had this idea about what it means to be from the American South.”

But there’s a lot more to Ross than that first impression. The guitarist and vocalist spent 10 years studying music from Brazil and Latin America, during which he founded the group Matuto. He’s also won two Grammys with his group Ranky Tanky, which focuses on Gullah music of the southeastern Sea Islands.

In 2019, those years of conversations about cultural assumptions and expectations took shape into something new when Ross founded the American Patchwork Quartet. This collective of musicians reinterprets American folk tunes through their varied cultural backgrounds and musical training. And on September 13 at 7:30 pm, the group will perform in Finney Chapel as part of the Oberlin Artist Recital Series. Tickets available online. [Read more…]

A conversation with Cuban bandleader Omar Sosa

Cuban-born pianist, composer, and bandleader Omar Sosa has forged a three-decade career blending Afro-Cuban roots with global jazz traditions, and a decidedly philosophical perspective. He has earned multiple GRAMMY® and Latin GRAMMY® nominations, major awards, and has attracted an international following.

When he makes his debut in Gartner Auditorium at the Cleveland Museum of Art on September 10 at 7:30 pm, he will  bring along his new Trio, Outside the Box. Tickets are available online.

I spoke with Sosa by Zoom in a lively, warm conversation as he prepared to take the stage at the Detroit Jazz Festival over Labor Day weekend. Though he has traveled the globe, Cleveland has been on his radar through a personal connection. His former partner is the daughter of the well-known local architect Julian Madison. “She always told me, I hope you can play in Cleveland one day,” Sosa recalled. “And now that we’ve split up, I will play in Cleveland. Life is like that.”

Karen Holtkamp Memorial at Trinity Cathedral September 19 to feature many musical tributes

In addition to the funeral service held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights marking the passing of Karen McFarlane Holtkamp early in June at the age of 83, a memorial service has been scheduled for Friday, September 19 at 2 pm at Trinity Cathedral.

In a special invitation, John McElliott, president of Karen McFarlane Artists, Inc. writes, “It will be quite a musical event. The music will include the Duruflé Requiem — mostly complete — with James O’Donnell, formerly of Westminster Abbey and now at Yale University, conducting, and Todd Wilson accompanying.The choir will be a hand-picked group of local singers from various churches and ensembles plus a couple of our artists.

“Todd will play the hymns and service music. The Cathedral’s Dean, BJ Owens, will officiate. Eulogies will be offered by Karen’s daughter, Sarah Polly, and David Higgs. Voluntaries will be played by George Baker, Ken Cowan, David Higgs, Alan Morrison, Nathan Laube, and Todd Wilson. [Read more…]

Cleveland Orchestra Associate Conductor Daniel Reith: a final Blossom concert and a fond farewell

Daniel Reith was appointed assistant conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra by Music Director Franz Welser-Möst at the beginning of the 2022–23 season. In June of 2024, following a one-year contract extension, he was promoted to the position of associate conductor through the end of the 2024–25 season.

On Saturday, August 16 at 7:00 pm, Reith will conclude his tenure when he leads The Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom Music Center in a program of music by Edward Elgar, Gabriella Smith, and Max Bruch (tickets are available online.)

He made his Cleveland Orchestra subscription debut in February 2023 when he replaced Finnish conductor Klaus Mäkelä on very short notice. He also stepped in for Welser-Möst to lead the Orchestra as part of the first annual Mandel Opera & Humanities festival concert in May 2023.

Reith has also led the Orchestra in many performances, including Education Concerts in Cleveland and Miami, the Family Concert series, the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Concert, and the Orchestra’s inaugural Sensory-Friendly Concerts.

A conversation with Cooper International Piano Competition winner Anna Avramidou

On Thursday, July 24 during the finals of the Cooper International Piano Competition at Severance Music Center, Anna Avramidou made a major statement with her performance of Tchaikovsky’s Concerto No. 1 with The Cleveland Orchestra under the direction of Samy Rachid.

In his review, Daniel Hathaway of ClevelandClassical.com described the 17-year old Cypriot as “a thoughtful player who is well in command of dynamic changes. In the opening movement, she balanced well-rounded phrases with lightning bolts of technical passages and a beautiful cadenza.”

Although she was up against some stiff competition from Anwen Deng (16, Australia) and Sawako Harada (18, Japan), both of whom were awarded second prize, in the end the jury bestowed the $20,000 first prize on Avramidou.

We reached Anna Avramidou by phone in Oxford, England, where she was participating in the annual Oxford Piano Festival. I began our conversation by congratulating her on winning the Cooper Competition.

Cleveland Silent Film Festival double bill features soundtrack by pianist Mike Petrone

In 2001, pianist Mike Petrone helped director John Baumgartner create the soundtrack to a silent film called War Story. Then he shelved the recordings and never thought about them again. Until last year.

When a friend directing a show at Clague Playhouse reached out to ask if they could use some of the recordings, Petrone dug them back up and listened to them for the first time in decades.

This summer, he’s found himself studying that score again. That’s all thanks to the Cleveland Silent Film Festival, who decided not only to screen Baumgartner’s film, but also ask Petrone to accompany it.

On Saturday, August 9, War Story and Charlie Chaplin’s Sunnyside (1919) will be presented as a double feature at the main Cleveland Public Library, with Petrone providing a live score from the keyboard. The 3:00 pm concert in the Louis Stokes Wing Auditorium is free. [Read more…]
