On Thursday, November 18 at 7:30 pm in Severance Hall, Vernon will share the solo spotlight with his longtime stand partner and TCO first assistant principal viola, Lynne Ramsey, for the world premiere of Richard Sortomme’s Concerto for Two Violas on themes from Bedřich Smetana’s “From My Life” Quartet. The concert, under the direction of music director laureate Christoph von Dohnányi, will also include Smetana’s Overture to The Bartered Bride and Franz Schubert’s Symphony in C (“The Great”). Conrad Tao will make his Northeast Ohio debut on the Tuesday Musical series on Wednesday, November 18 at 7:30 in Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall. Tao’s fascinating program, the 2015 Margaret Baxtresser Piano Recital, will include works by Lang, Bach, Carter, Wolfe, Rachmaninoff, and Mussorgsky.

The evening of Rust Belt compositions will include John Sokol’s 3 thin-slices for solo cello, Jeffrey Mumford’s Echoes from within Brightening Fabric for harp and vibraphone, Jessie Downs’ Noticing and Truth-Telling: a musical sermon after Mary Hammond for scordatura harp, Sivan Silver-Swartz’s Untitled V for 4-20 pitched, sustaining instruments (world premiere), and two pieces by Judy Jackson — Strip Tease, a graphic score for solo bass, and Mental Games, a video score for harp, percussion, violin, guitar, and electronics. On Saturday, November 21 at 7:30 pm at Plymouth Church, Grisha Goryachev will present a concert of Flamenco music as part of the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society’s International Series. A demonstration of Flamenco dancing by the Fairmount Spanish Dancers, led by Saundra Bohl with live guitar accompaniment, will begin at 7:05.
“I really look forward to Saturday. I’m going to play some of my all-time favorite pieces. During the first part I’ll play some of the older, more traditional Flamenco numbers, and during the second part I’ll include some modern pieces. The concert will be about an hour.” [Read more…]

Performers will include soprano Emily Stauch, violinists Mari Sato, Kimia Ghaderi, James Thompson, and Virginia Wolf Lewis, violist Jessica Pasternak, cellist Carlyn Kessler, and pianists Linda Jones and Sean Schulze.
“I grew up in a family with a lot of classical music playing in the house, including Sibelius, who was one of my parents’ favorite composers,” said Emily Stauch, who spearheaded the concert. “My mother would even clean the house while listening to Sibelius.” [Read more…]
