Friends of fifteen years will come together as duo partners in the next concert on the Arts Renaissance Tremont series. On Sunday, January 21 at 3:00 pm at Pilgrim Congregational Church, clarinetist Franklin Cohen and pianist Zsolt Bognár will play a program that includes art songs by Beethoven and Fauré, two famous sonatas by Poulenc and Brahms, and a rarely-heard sonata by Mieczysław Weinberg. A freewill offering is requested.
“It’s beautiful music and I really look forward to playing it, especially in that church,” Cohen said in a recent conversation. “It’s extraordinary — a beautiful space and a landmark of Cleveland — and it has all Tiffany windows. I’ve always liked playing there.”

Last Sunday afternoon, November 19, talented pianist Sandra Shapiro stepped in for clarinetist Franklin Cohen and pianist Zsolt Bognár on the Arts Renaissance Tremont series at Pilgrim Church. She played an imaginative recital titled “In My Father’s Footsteps — A Daughter’s Search for Answers.” The program was the first of four recitals inspired by her father’s World War II odyssey from Russia around the world to the United States. Arts Renaissance Tremont welcomed back an old friend, violinist Jinjoo Cho, to open its 27th season at Pilgrim United Church of Christ on Sunday, October 1. Pianist Hyun Soo Kim joined her in a well-chosen and varied two-hour program of sonatas and character pieces by Beethoven, Fauré, Chausson, Tchaikovsky, and Saint-Saëns. [Read more…]

At the end of a long concert season, the final performance in a series may be a happy or a bittersweet moment. For the Mosa String Quartet — violinists James Thompson and Brian Allen, violist Christine Wu, and cellist Anna Hurt — the last Arts Renaissance Tremont concert on Sunday, May 7 at Pilgrim Church was just about the last appearance the group would make as a quartet, for Wu and Allen are off to graduate studies at Juilliard and the University of Michigan, respectively.

On Sunday, May 7 at 3:00 pm, bassoonist Barrick Stees and the Mosa Quartet will present a program of chamber music by Schubert, Ravel, and Miguel del Aguila as part of the Arts Renaissance Tremont series. A freewill offering will be received.
Barrick Stees, Assistant Principal Bassoon of The Cleveland Orchestra, teaches at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Kent/Blossom Music Festival. An esteemed educator, he received the U.S. Secretary of Education’s Presidential Scholar Teacher Recognition Award. He has released several albums and has performed extensively both nationally and internationally.

On Sunday, October 2, Arts Renaissance Tremont kicked off its 2016-17 classical music season with an outstanding matinee recital at the Art Nouveau Pilgrim Church.
