Conte describes his Sonata for Clarinet and Piano as a work in progress, and Sunday’s concert will feature the first movement, Allegro moderato, appassionato. Having grown up in Cleveland, Conte has long admired Cohen’s playing. [Read more…]

In the last few years, BRB has come to be a reliable harbinger of the holiday season with a series of performances throughout Northeast Ohio, but the twenty-year old brass ensemble started out playing during all seasons of the year. Then its members, originally area freelancers, began landing permanent or temporary jobs in prestigious orchestras in the USA and Canada, making it difficult for the group to come together on a regular basis — except during the holidays. The program, comprising music by Lennox Berkeley, York Bowen and Paul Leary, begins with a work originally written for the viola de gamba, J.S. Bach’s Gamba Sonata No. 1 in G, BWV 1027. King said “I heard somebody play one of those sonatas on horn about 25 years ago and it always stuck in my head. I decided that if I ever got permission I would want to try that too. Besides, Schumann’s Adagio and Allegro for horn is often played on cello, so I thought we’d get back at them by stealing one of their pieces.” [Read more…]

Arts Renaissance Tremont pulled it off again. Each season the series organizers present at least one program that, on paper, seems so niche, so inside the inner-circles of classical music, that it causes you to wonder how many people this program is going to attract. Robert Woolfrey led off with Oskar Morawetz’s Clarinet Sonata from 1981. [Read more…]

The program includes Oskar Morawetz’s Clarinet Sonata (1981), Heinrich von Herzogenberg’s Trio in D for Oboe, Horn & Piano, op. 61, Poulenc’s Trio for Oboe, Bassoon & Piano (1926) and Mozart’s Quintet in E-flat for winds and piano, K. 452 (1784).
Cicilia Yudha, who is an Assistant Professor at the Dana School of Music Faculty at Youngstown State University and coordinator of the keyboard musicianship program, pointed out during a recent telephone conversation, “As a pianist, it is rare to play chamber music with woodwinds. There is a lot more repertoire in the piano trio and quartet area. But this music is such a joy to play and of course these players are all top notch. I’m just very happy to be doing it.”
Oboist Mary Lynch who along with Yudha spearheaded the program added, “I’m very excited about the whole program. I think it presents a good picture of the repertoire for winds and piano. And we’re all just very happy to be playing this music together and excited to bring it to people.” [Read more…]
