Gruca White Ensemble to feature guitarist/composer works at Bop Stop

Gruca-White-EnsembleIt’s no secret that the Cleveland area has a vibrant classical guitar scene. But it wasn’t until flutist Linda White relocated here from Wyoming, that she discovered the breadth of repertoire that has, and continues to be written for flute and guitar.

“Before I moved here, I can say that I had never heard a classical guitarist perform live, let alone work with one,” White said during a telephone conversation. “As I began to learn the concert repertoire, it spoke to me because of all of the different colors and sounds the instrument is capable of producing.”

On Saturday, March 4 at 8:00 pm at the Bop Stop, Linda White will join classical guitarist Robert Gruca, performing as the Gruca White Ensemble, in a concert that will feature music by three guitarist/composers. [Read more…]

Factory Seconds Brass Trio gears up for concerts at BW, Bop Stop, and on the Rocky River Chamber Series

Factory-SecondsThe amusingly-named Factory Seconds Brass Trio — all second-chair players in The Cleveland Orchestra — will have a busy schedule in February. Trumpeter Jack Sutte, hornist Jesse McCormick, and trombonist Richard Stout will start out the month with two different concerts on Sunday, February 12.

At 3:00 pm, the Trio will play a faculty concert in Gamble Auditorium at Baldwin Wallace titled “Well-Tempered Hindemith: Modernist, Traditionalist, Pragmatist, Artist.” Pianist Christine Fuoco will join each of the players for a solo sonata by Paul Hindemith, and pianist Christina Dahl will take over the bench for Hindemith’s Ludus Tonalis, “a counterpoint homage to J.S. Bach.”

At 7:00 pm on the 12th, Factory Seconds will be the featured performers at the Bop Stop as the Baldwin Wallace Bach Festival presents its latest edition of Bach Haus and Brews. The music will include bluegrass, broadway, jazz, and — of course — Bach. [Read more…]

Hiroya Tsukamoto to present solo guitar concert at Bop Stop

tsukamotoWhen guitarist Hiroya Tsukamoto presents his solo concert at the BOP STOP on Thursday, September 22nd at 8:00 pm, audiences will hear music that has been described as ‘cinematic guitar poetry.’ His music has also been referred to as ‘earthy, organic soundscapes that impart a mood of peace and tranquility.’

“I’ll be playing a mix of eclectic acoustic music,” Tsukamoto said during a recent telephone conversation. “I try to make the concerts a trip that takes listeners somewhere nice.” [Read more…]

NOYO Young Composers at the Bop Stop (May 15)

NOYO-ComposersHearing a concert featuring six premieres is not unusual. However, when those new works are all written by high-school age composers, that is a reason to take note. On Sunday afternoon, May 15, a capacity crowd gathered at the Bop Stop to hear an impressive concert that featured works by students in the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestra Young Composers Program. FiveOne Experimental Orchestra to present “The Mashup Concert” at Bop Stop May 13

FiveOneBopStopMashup (noun): A mixture or fusion of disparate elements. Mashup (music): A musical genre encompassing songs which consist entirely of parts of other songs.

On Friday, May 13 at 9:00 pm at the Bop Stop, 51XO (FiveOne Experimental Orchestra) will present “The Mashup Concert.” The program will feature mashups, overlays, and works that live somewhere in between the pop and classical worlds.

Musicians have been mashing things up for centuries in one way or another. Sometimes the desired outcome was to create a new musical style, while other times the purpose was to create comedy. Whatever the reason, creating mashups has never become passé.

“Concertos Comiques”

CorretteFinding ways to circumvent rules has always been a popular pastime. It has also often inspired creative genius. When Louis XIV put a stranglehold on entertainments such as opera and theater by enforcing rules designed to secure official monopolies, non-court composers and playwrights countered with Fair Theaters (Théâtre de la Foire), low-cost performances on the outskirts of Paris. The satirical plots regularly mocked the pretentiousness of the bourgeois by featuring servants who were far more intelligent than their bosses, or by poking fun at old men who chased after young girls.

On Saturday, May 7 at 8:00 pm at the Bop Stop and Sunday, May 8 at 4:00 pm at Plymouth Church, Les Délices will present Concertos Comiques. The program will include works by Michel Corrette, Francesco Corbetta, Joseph Bodin de Boismortier, and Jean-Joseph Mouret, performed by Debra Nagy (oboe), Julie Andrijeski and Scott Metcalfe (violins), Josh Lee (viola da gamba), and Simon Martyn-Ellis (theorbo and baroque guitar). Syndicate for the New Arts: triple bill at the Bop Stop (April 9)

Bop-Stop-040916Variety is the spice of life and on Saturday, April 9 a large crowd gathered at the Bop Stop to hear a triple bill performance that demonstrated how much variety exists within the confines of contemporary music. Presented by the Syndicate for the New Arts,  the evening kicked off with Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s Particles (2007). Beautifully performed by Syndicate percussionist Ben Rempel and harpist Caitlin Mehrtens, the work’s quiet, ethereal lines seemed to float through the room. [Read more…]

Renaissance band Ayreheart at the Bop Stop (April 7)

AyreheartOn Thursday, April 7 at the Bop Stop, the Renaissance band Ayreheart presented a  concert titled “Will You Walk the Woods so Wild.” The captivating program — performed by Ronn McFarlane, lute, Brian Kay, vocals and lute, Will Morris, colascione, and Mattias Rucht, percussion — explored the intersection between folk music and art music in 16th- and 17th- century England, Scotland, and Wales.
