Jakub Hrůša returns to Cleveland Orchestra with music from Germany, Czech Republic (Mar. 5)

CLEVELAND, Ohio — During Jakub Hrůša’s first decade of Cleveland Orchestra appearances, the Czech conductor programmed a wide range of music, including works from his home country, cornerstones of the orchestral canon, and lesser-known gems. This weekend’s concerts feature all three.

On Thursday, March 5, after more than four years away from the Cleveland podium, Hrůša returned to Severance Music Center with music by Johannes Brahms, Bohuslav Martinů, and Vítězslava Kaprálová. Without a concerto, the program focused instead on the forms of the symphony and sinfonietta — as well as on the synergy between Hrůša and the Orchestra, which produced some very fine playing.

Pianist-composer Chris Neiner is the featured artist today on the Tuesday Noon series at Church of the Covenant, where he’ll play music by Copland, Barber, and John Adams, as well as three works of his own. There will be a freewill offering.

And at 7:30, the Cleveland Chamber Music Society welcomes the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble to Plymouth Church in Shaker Heights, where a group of eight string players will play works by Brahms, Henry Purcell, and George Enescu. Tickets are available online.

The Cleveland Orchestra welcomes the return of a conductor and the debut of a soloist

On Thursday, November 4 at 7:30 pm The Cleveland Orchestra will welcome the return of guest conductor Jakub Hrůša and welcome cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason to the Mandel Concert Hall stage for the first time.

The program features Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Ballade in a, Elgar’s Cello Concerto and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 6. The program is repeated on Friday at 7:30 pm, Saturday at 8:00 pm, and Sunday at 3:00 pm. Tickets are available online.

We caught up with Jakub Hrůša at his hotel and began our conversation by asking him what it’s like to be able to return to the States? Our conversation with Sheku Kanneh-Mason is below.

Jakub Hrůša: This is the first time I’ve flown overseas since the beginning of the pandemic and I’m very happy that it was to Cleveland — it’s a very special feeling. Because of the history of my visits — for a while I was coming almost every year  — I think of Cleveland as my American home. It’s great that after this pandemic pause the first people I see are these musicians. And that feeling connects to the public as well, so I’m very happy that after that period of absence I can be here again. [Read more…]

Jakub Hrůša guest conducts two November Cleveland Orchestra concerts (Nov. 9 & 14)

You can usually count on Jakub Hrůša to offer up some Czech music during his guest conducting appearances at Severance Hall. Not this time, but in his recent two weekends of concerts, works by Russian, American, and Austrian composers revealed the conductor’s ability to communicate in multiple musical languages. His readings of Shostakovich and John Adams were as probing and masterful as his takes on Beethoven and Mahler were fresh and surprising, and he brought his colleagues along with him all the way. The Cleveland Orchestra & Chorus: Hrůša, Adams & Mahler this week

After leading The Cleveland Orchestra last week in works by Shostakovich and Beethoven, Jakub Hrůša returns to the Severance Hall podium this week to conduct the Cleveland premiere of John Adams’ On the Transmigration of Souls and Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 4. Performances are on Thursday, November 14 at 7:30 pm, Saturday the 16th at 8:00 pm and Sunday the 17th at 3:00 pm. Tickets are available online.

John Adams’ On the Transmigration of Souls was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic and Lincoln Center to commemorate the first anniversary of the September 11 attacks in 2001. The composer has written that

“Transmigration means ‘the movement from one place to another’ or ‘the transition from one state of being to another.’ But in this case I meant it to imply the movement of the soul from one state to another. And I don’t just mean the transition from living to dead, but also the change that takes place within the souls of those that stay behind, of those who suffer pain and loss and then themselves come away from that experience.”

The single movement, 25-minute work for orchestra, chorus, children’s choir, and pre-recorded tape was awarded the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Music. [Read more…]

“There are few steps in the history of music as paramount as was the ‘Eroica’ Symphony,” Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša said during a telephone conversation. “It’s a piece from hundreds of years ago, but it’s still stimulating and sometimes shocking music to hear — it just doesn’t make you tired of listening to it.”

On Thursday, November 7 at 7:30 pm, Jakub Hrůša will return to the Severance Hall stage to lead The Cleveland Orchestra in Beethoven’s monumental Symphony No. 3 (“Eroica”). The evening will also include Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with Sergey Khachatryan as soloist. The program will be repeated on Friday and Saturday at 8:00 pm and Sunday at 3:00 pm. Over the past few years, Hrůša has become a wonderful addition to the Orchestra’s guest conductor roster. He said that he never gets tired of conducting the Beethoven Third. “I used to do it a lot, then I took a break from it. Then I did it again and now I’m coming back to it after another break. In my view, I don’t think it’s played too often — it’s a masterpiece with no equal. Within Beethoven’s oeuvre it’s extraordinarily important. Very few symphonies in the history of music caused such a revolutionary shock as this symphony did.”  [Read more…]

Asked to list some Czech composers, most of us could immediately come up with Dvořák, Smetana, Martinů, Janáček, and maybe Suk. Miloslav Kabeláč’s name would probably not come tripping off the tongue, unless you’re a performer who has played his Wind Sextet. So Cleveland Orchestra audiences learned something from Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša the weekend of November 15-18, when he brought Kabeláč’s Mystery of Time to his guest appearances at Severance Hall. Conductor Jakub Hrůša returns to Severance Hall

When Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša makes his annual visit to Cleveland, audiences have come to expect that the concert will include a gem that is rarely, if ever, performed at Severance Hall. His past programs have included Martinů’s Parables, Dvořák’s The Golden Spinning Wheel, Janáček’s Jealousy, and Suk’s Asrael Symphony.

On Thursday, November 15 at 7:30 pm, Hrůša will keep that tradition alive when he leads The Cleveland Orchestra in Miloslav Kabeláč’s Mystery of Time. “I think he is the most important symphonist of 20th-century Czech music after Martinů,” the conductor said during a telephone interview. The concert will also include Stravinsky’s Capriccio (for piano and orchestra) featuring Emanuel Ax, and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. The program will be repeated on Saturday, November 17 at 8:00 pm, and Sunday November 18 at 3:00 pm. Tickets are available online.

Hrůša noted that the lineage of Czech symphonic composers begins with Dvořák, whom he called the “founder” of that repertoire. “Then you have Smetana, who was not interested in the symphony but wrote symphonic poems. After that is [Zdeněk] Fibich, then Janáček — who never wrote a symphony, then Martinů with his six symphonies. There is always the question of who is next.”
