On Sunday, April 11 at 5:00 pm, Music From The Western Reserve will present the ensemble that bears the name of Kent State University’s unofficial mascot. The pre-recorded online program is free. Click here at start time.
Formed in 2011, the Black Squirrel Winds — Diane McCloskey (flute), Danna Sundet (oboe), Amitai Vardi (clarinet), Mark DeMio (bassoon), and Kent Larmee (horn) — is a faculty ensemble at Kent State’s Hugh A. Glauser School of Music.
In addition to performing on the University’s main and satellite campus, as faculty the Black Squirrels spend a good deal of their time coaching students. DeMio said that although they enjoy playing challenging pieces such as the quintets of John Harbison, Jennifer Higdon, and Jean Francaix, “we’re always looking for repertoire that we want to play and is good for teaching to younger players. And most of the music that is on this concert has that element to it.”

For these musicians, their tenure at Kent Blossom is more than just performance based — they’ll be working closely with the 43 visiting students accepted this year. [Read more…]

This summer’s students (16 of whom are international, hailing from Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Japan, and Colombia) will arrive on July 1 and begin their experience with a dinner for participants, faculty, donors, and host families who will house eight of the students. “Rehearsals, coachings, and lessons start right up the next day,” Sepulveda said.
Recruitment began in mid-winter. “I changed the process a bit, shortening it to end before the first of March. Instead of print, we did online promotion using the Violin Channel and Facebook, which allows us to reach people faster,” he said, noting that the Festival is now old enough that it’s fun to see students of former students applying. Once they settle in at Kent, there are busy days ahead. [Read more…]

“Chatham Baroque sits at the center,” Festival director Dirk Garner said in a telephone conversation. “They’ll be doing their own concert of music by Bach and earlier composers on Friday night, and they’re sharing their expertise by helping prepare the orchestra for Saturday evening’s performance of the St. John Passion.”
This year, the Bach Festival has hired a professional orchestra for the major Bach work. “Chatham’s Andrew Fouts will be the concertmaster, Scott Pauley is playing lute, and Patricia Halvorsen viola da gamba. They’re great musicians and really cool people,” Garner said. [Read more…]
